VW exhaust install help

I got a set of the VW tips for my Scrambler. I got the bottom mounted up fine but I cannot fit the top heat shield. The bend in the shield makes contact with the VW tip preventing me from installing it.

I could find an appropriate bolt and nut and add a spacer to move the shield out far enough to install the exhaust, but I was wondering what overs have done to solve this problem.

These are the flared EMPI tips, not the straight pipes.

Thanks a lot for the help.

Thanks for that thread, Forchetto.

Most guys don't seem to have any trouble or at least don't mention it. In almost all pics the shields are very close or actually touching the pipes though.

I do remember seeing one post where the need to modify the shield was mentioned, but the exact modification wasn't described.

Anyway, mine definitely won't go on with the heat shield in the stock configuration.

Hopefully someone else who had to do a little modification before mounting these VW tips will chime in.

Thanks.

Yeah, there are a number of great threads on this topic (the one mentioned above, one by Irutt and another by 3lliot, to name a few) that helped convince me to try this mod out. Unfortunately, none of them addressed my particular mounting problem.

I'm guessing that the mounts on my pipes were just aligned a little differently for some reason, since no one else seems to have encountered any problems.

Try using those EMGO angle pipes made for the Bonnies. That's what I did when I put the Emgo shorties on. You might like the result, they are cheap at like $39 I believe. Gets the angle pretty good IMO.

I've too have been struggling with how quiet and unattractive the stock exhaust is. Let alone how many times I've burned my pants on the pipe just ahead of the front heat shield (I'm 6'5" for reference).

So I recently pulled the shields, and painted them wrinkle semi gloss black. That helped in the looks dept, but it still sounds like my mom's old Singer sewing machine. I dont want to debaffle what might someday go back on the bike. I'm not even sure I want dual pipes all the way back (love the Arrow, but again-1000+ dollars is just insane).

My current plan is to keep the front curves, mate them together right at the factory front heat shield, and run a single pipe back to an old unused Supertrapp I have leftover from my sandrail project. No idea what it'll sound like, but it'll cost less than $100 total, and be one of a kind. Lets see if 10 years of metal fab skills are still in my head 8 years later.

PS, I've ridden with Gary and his scrambled Thruxton-it sounds amazing, I can only imagine how much cooler it'd be with the 270* crank.

Good luck with your project! Post some pics when you get it done.

If you change your mind and want some flared beetle tips for cheap let me know. I loved the look a lot, BUT my sensitive ears couldn't take the extra noise. I guess I'm just a sewing machine kinda guy. My airhead sounds the same way too.

Best of luck!

PM'd you.

It'll be a while before I pull the trigger on cutting/welding up stuff. Looks like the top pipe is one piece from the head flange to the back? I kinda dont want to butcher the headers for this to work-and a second set second hand on CL are way overpriced. I kicked around the idea of going TEC 2-1 low slung, but I'm concerned about right side controls needed modded, and destroying the Scrambler "look". Function over form though, who knows what it'll end up being.

I've recently swapped out the original silencers for the vw pipes. Top heat shield is resting against the pipes but not fouling enough to prevent installation. Made up some baffles similar to others I saw linked here from copper piping and tried to squeeze in a little matting - but not much room. Seems to have toned it down enough. Well worth trying and an easy switch out when required

I did use the tors map on my stock scrambler with ai in place and the bike felt better than stock map. I used the tors map the most over the last year and would switch from the hefty stock cans to the vw tips depending if I had a passenger.
I'm basically doing little mods and then seeing how they bike runs before the next mod is started.
Ai removal has definitely helped with the running of the bike, there is no more back firing when decelerating and the on/off snatch throttle response has diminished.
You don't have to do the ai or o2 removal for the vw tips, they are just mods most people find beneficial and are easy to complete.
Over the next few weeks I will give the arrow maps a chance as I recently made an air intake belmouth out of the polaris belmouth for snowmobiles. (That really makes it sound good hearing the rush of air being sucked into the bike)

thanks for the info hehehemann. i like the fact that you could switch back and forth between the stock and vw mufflers using the tors map. my girlfriend rides with me a lot - hoping the vw tips won't be too close for comfort! may have to rethink the arrow and go with the tors instead based on solely on the transferability of mufflers....can't have her walking around with a seared right leg! (i assume that's the reason for alternating!)

Haha, yes, it was a case of my gf not liking how close her legs were to the end of the pipes and no heat shield.
I did briefly give a an arrow map a run but it dropped my mpg from a regular 130 miles til light down to 100 miles without significant difference from the tors.
Right now I run the vw pipes with tors tune, ai removal and the wider air intake/belmouth. Also have a 17t front sprocket and the bike is very quick off the mark.
I still have 6 months warranty on the bike, so all this except the ai removal is reversible to stock form. Ai removal is not a problem with the dealer I bought the bike from.
