Just curious what the dealers are getting to remove the cat box these days. I was thinking of doing it in the spring.Just called my dealer,he said around $400.

Did it myself.
You'll need a new tune from the dealer.
The catbypass tune.
I'd also recommend a 12 minute tune if you do it.
there IS an increase of "percieved" HP.
Not sure if its real or just seems like it.
Like removing the secondaries.
It "seems" faster but couldn't be,
just instantly quick so it "seems" faster.
If you get a bypass, you'll also need a new gasket,
about $15. at your dealer.
You'll still have and use the ones in your pipes,
so you'll only need one.
The one that goes where your header hooks up to the bypass.
Hope this helps.
Well worth it IMHO.

Ran my stock pipes with the bypass.
New tune at the dealers (1/2 hr.) 32.50 I think it was.
12 minute tune when I got it home was free and probably didn't need it, but I just felt better doing it.
Then I knew it was right.
I know after I had my new TPS put on the tech said it was right and done.
It wasn't. I did the 12 minute tune when I got home and now its right.
I honestly believe there IS a HP gain by deleting the cat.
My seat of the pants dyno says there is. Don't know what a "real" dyno would say though.
Of course, the seat of the pants dyno says its faster without the secondaries too.;)

It does. My wife complained about the increase. Me? I love sounding like a WW2 fighter in full song. I like the ringing in my ears after a ride too!

P.S. I run TORs.

Mark,
the price of $15. is about what the dealer charges for the one gasket you need to buy.
The $35.50 is for the 1/2 hour service charge for installing the catbypass tune.
Then you have whatever you pay for your bypass pipe.
Ebay, one of the forums, one of the people you know, the dealer,
you know, its impossible to say what the total cost will be without knowing how much you'll pay for the pipe.
$300.-$350. from the dealer. Thats alot different than $100. off ebay.
But your out of pocket cost AFTER you have the pipe shouldn't be over $50. total.

Looking around (newr3.com) the cat bypasss pipe in stainless is about $382.00 . Makes me wonder where my dealer came up with the $400 estimate, if the gasket and tune are an additional $55.00 plus labor.Finding a cat box bypass pipe on e-bay or any where else for $100 may take awhile..

could probably have one made pretty cheap at a muffler shop.
Thought about that route myself.
Especially if you wanted to "add" your own custom mufflers.
Thought about one down each side, like the touring,
and bought a set of touring off ebay,
so I'll have to "make" a flow through pipe to widen it to fit my rocket.
No big deal.
Anything is possible with money and imagination.

yea but it's been awhile since I seen draglines bike or heard anything from him.
After he deleted all his posts on the .com site I kinda lost track of him.
Seen him once or twice on Triumphtalk and thats about it.
Him and Walt kind of keep to themselves I guess.
Either that or I haven't been invited to their party.;)

No, nothing to do with cat removal,
but cool none the less, so thats got to be worth something.
I mean, just look at the originality of the parts.
A lot of work went into that red unit, and I'm pretty sure its cat free,
so I guess its an example of what you can do once you get the cat box out of the way;).

Makes perfect sense. Until about 2007 or 2008, only California's exhaust limits required the catalytic convertor. The rest of the country was more lax. The EPA has since adopted California motorcycle exhaust standards for the whole nation. (There's still a difference in fuel vapor recovery requirements, though.)
