feel a bit silly asking but....i have seen recommendations to soak clutch plates in oil before reassembly, others stating to clean them with varsol or similar cleaners. they seem to stick together more when oil soaked but i'm too afraid of what cleaners might do to the bonding agents to have tried the other option... any suggestions?

B&C, use specialist brake cleaner, either aerosol or from a tub. This is formulated to clean but not harm the adhesive. Not sure on your bike but............ the oil in the primary is for lubing the chain, ONLY!
DO NOT over fill and use what's reccommended for the bike. Unless you tell us what you have because there might be a better option.

ditto with all of the above..

i scuff up the metal plates with 300 grit wet/dry, then spray off with brake cleaner..
while you are in there, check plates for straightness with a straight edge.
also de-burr the tabs that engage the slots.
check chain wheel & center for wear in the slots.. if heavy wear; replace them.
makes a huge diff, in clutch action.
last but not least adjust clutch springs so the plates lift off evenly.
this is done by turning engine over via/ kickstart and operating clutch, while adjusting tension.

oh, and be careful of proper pushrod adjustment. -j
