feel a bit silly asking but....i have seen recommendations to soak clutch plates in oil before reassembly, others stating to clean them with varsol or similar cleaners. they seem to stick together more when oil soaked but i'm too afraid of what cleaners might do to the bonding agents to have tried the other option... any suggestions?

I'm with Roy 100% on this.
Clean the plates, DON'T oil them.
Also, scuff up the plain steel plates on smooth concrete by whirling them in a circular pattern, to knock the glaze off them. Wash them afterwards.
