I'd like to do this mod to my Thrux. What brand of thermos matches the stock gauge pod dimensions? How do you determine where to drill the holes? I'm also willing to pay someone to make these for me.
WalMart Ozark Trail from Wallyworld are the exact match in diameter and length - a straight swap, all you need is the holes - use the dimensions and hole pitch (distance apart) from your existing gauges and you're good to go. See my earlier post plus Englane's, Wolfpack 94 and a host of others to help you.

I never posted a pic of the final product. I just placed the new cup in the stock cup and traced out the openings, after I took the plastic liner out of the stainless cups I just had to make sure I went a little deeper than the traced line on the side cuts due to the difference in height with the new cup sitting in the other. I then cut the metal with a Dremel tool. Also, you can make the holes in the bottom slightly larger than OEM to allow for a tiny bit of slack when fitting because the "larger" hole would still be smaller than the nut and washer covering it. Oh, and it the cuts are not perfect only you would know. Where the cuts are made is mostly hidden unless someone really leans over and purposely examines what you did. Give it a shot, have fun, and get the satisfaction of the good looking homemade mod.

Triton and Wolfpack,
Thanks for the feedback. I searched Walmart's website, but could not find the Ozark Trail thermos. I don't think they carry it anymore. Did you guys buy yours online or at a brick and mortar Walmart? Are you aware of any other retailer that carries these? Thanks!

Hey retroracer, I'm highly considering buying these for my mod. Might help you too.

They're dirt cheap too. Only 16.99 for the set, and they're pretty well the exact size we need. 4" O.D. x 6" tall (would have to cut the height down of course). They don't slightly taper, but I think they would look pretty good regardless.

As far as I can tell, the bottom (area with the acorn nuts) is 3-7/8" diameter and the widest part of the pod near the speedo is 4" (4-1/32" to be exact)

I'm like you, I tried finding a thermos but they're relatively expensive to buy two. This canister set I linked to is a set of 3 so if you f'ed up one at least you have a spare.

esbowman/retroracer:
I bought mine at a brick & mortar super walmart. if you do find them and you feel the cost is too high then go to my earlier post on 09-12-2009, 07:22 PM and read the last line.;)

Gauge Pod Update

For those that are interested in doing this mod but have been unable to find the cups...

I called Thermos customer support last friday at 1-800-831-9242 and ordered two replacement cups for model DF2212. Three days later they are in my mailbox at a total of $9.50 delivered.

Thanks Mope. I just called and she said they are 2 bucks each and with shipping it was $7 for me.

When calling push 5 and then 1.

Happy Grandpa

Wow. Just ordered mine. That was easy. Thanks for all the ordering info guys. $7 after shipping. I've been wanting to do this mod since before I even had my Thruxton, and for 7 bucks, I can't put it off any longer.

After reading that you guys paid 7 bucks I thought "what? I paid 9.50!" so I had to go back and check the shipping amount. I actually paid 7 also. Dunno what I was thinking!

Anyway, the lady I spoke to said a week to ten days for delivery but I ordered on a Friday and it arrived the following Wednesday.

Good luck!

I think I actually like the squared off cups more than the rounded Thermos cups because they look more stock; but to each their own.

I looked at two WalMart stores in St Louis, and did not find any Ozark Trail cups or thermoses. Has anyone found the Ozark Trail cups anywhere? Online perhaps? been searching for a while now. I think the model number is 913401p according to an earlier posted photo.

Well I'd been thinking about this for a while, then I see I can buy these seperately... So I call up, go through the deal... She tells me $3.00 each, I'm thinking to myself geesh others paid less :( and then she says, OK that's a total of $6.00 to your door.. :D Woo Hoo

Hey Rumrunner...Where in North GA are you? I'm in Dawsonville, near Moto 400.
I'm up in Gainesville on the North end of the Lake. Have you been by Moto400 since their change over :(

I actually went over to Freedom Thursday night for their RAT meeting. Good group of guys, that are trying to make it work right.

What are you riding, and have you gone to any of the Bike nights over at the Firkin & Crown?

Yeah I'm just a couple of miles from Moto 400. Seems like they're having a tough time. I hope they make it through the winter.

I'm wanting to do the Firkin and Crown but the next one is on a work night for me. Tell me more about this RAT meeting? My current ride is an '05 Thrux.

I can't get the plastic out of my Thermos cups. Is it really worth the trouble of removing the plastic inserts, drilling them separately and putting them back in? Why take them out in the first place?

I just left the plastic in. I used a dremel carbide bit for cutting metal and it worked well on the plastic too.
