My intiminators arrived yesterday and today I was all set to install them. I have my handy dandy Haynes manual and instructions from this forum, and I was ready to go. I raised the bike up to get the front wheel off the ground, then I removed the front fender, the speedo cable the windshield and the brake caliper, then it was time to remove the wheel. Oops, what the F$#% ! It takes a 24 MM hex on one side and a 14 MM hex on the other to remove the axle!
My good buddy Al informed me that the bottom of a craftsman plug socket wrench is usually 24 MM, and sure enough, I had one, and it is. And I was able to find a bolt that would fit into it with two nuts, so I can use it to remove one side. But I have nothing that is 14 MM. I tried Lowe's, Kragen, Ace Hardware, Napa, and a couple other places, and no one has a 14 MM hex wrench. Since I knew in advance to get a 22 MM socket for the fork caps I thought I was all prepared, but no such luck.
So now I have two questions. First, if I try Harbor Freight and Sears tomorrow and they don't have the 14 MM hex, any ideas where I should try? Question # 2, are there any more surprises that need special tools? I live in a small town in the foothills, and I'll be going to Stockton tomorrow, so they should have everything somewhere, if I can find where to look. I hate to go to the dealer for tools.
