Street Triple headlight transplant

It is with trepidation that I bring up the subject of the new headlight design, but here goes…

Today I have successfully fitted the latest lights to my ’09 Street Triple. The cost was £205.31 for the headlights (they come as a complete assembly) and £17.18 for the new instrument back with its ‘beak’. Add on the VAT and the total is £266.99 - not bad really, and bearing in mind Triumph have done little else but change the colour scheme, it’s a cheap upgrade.

For those who are interested in doing the same, it’s a pretty simple job, mainly complicated by the fact that in order to get to the headlight connector you’ve got to take the airbox off, which of course means tank off too. Still, it’s a nice, easy bike to work on and you can admire the build quality while you’re doing it.

The clamp holding the headlights on is easy to remove, and it’s a straight swap with the new ones. Connect it up, put everything back together, switch the ignition on and… the headlights don’t work. Only the sidelights are on, and further exploration shows that it’s blown a fuse as well. To cut a long story short, the reason is that the four-way connector that connects the headlights to the loom contains the same four wires (earth, high beam, low beam, sidelight), but they’re in a different order! The solution is to disconnect the lights and rewire the headlight block so that it corresponds with the loom. It’s a snap connector, and it’s a bit fiddly working out how to remove the spades. However, once done, it’s ignition on and, hey presto - instant upgrade to 2012 spec!

Apologies if this subject has already been covered - I couldn’t find it in a search.

Nice details but..

NOOOOoooooooooooooooooooooo

What have you done !!

In a year or 2 I'll be doing a write up on how to do the opposite! lol

I'm sorry but I'm not a fan of the new lights at all.. and don't get me started on the logo if you can even call it that..

I'm sure someone will do a thread on a retrofit before I can and I can't wait..

Nothing personal..

lol, and I'm the one wondering how much it would cost to change the lights on mine back to the original ;) If anyone wants to exchange a set, send me a pm :p

He's not the only one that did the same, a few speed triple owners went to the new lights also. They do look pretty good and are functional.

If you check out street-triple.co.uk there is a how to guide to headlamp removal/replacement with pics.
The trick is to slip the terminals out of the terminal block at the bulb end and pass the three cables out of the shell through the hole at the back.
I've done it (to fit carbon bowls) and it is fiddly but easy.
No need to remove tank or disturb the loom at all.
Switching headlamps to the new sort to p*ss off your better funded friends is a breeze and is said to give better light beam.

Does anybody know if we can adjust each of the headlight vertically independantly of each other. Right now I have the left light beam 8 inches below the the right at 6 feet. This drives me crazy as I would like to have the line both beams throw out lined up.

The light pattern are the same on both of them. They are flt with a 45 degree up and to the right to pick up road signs. Set correctly they should never cause irratation to on coming drivers. It is that horizontal left portion of the beam that is off. I used two pair of vice grips and some brute force this weekend and got them matched.

I hate to burst your bubble, but this bike was built to ride on the correct side of the road, the left hand side, like all civilised societys do. Thus the beams would be made to point slightly left.

Say what you may but the only difference between the right and wrong side drive headlights is the reflector. So it's not a matter of the bike being designed specifically for being driven on the wrong side of the road as it only takes a simple parts swap to make it for the right side.
Macbandit,
I almost always agree with your posts and often learn from them. BUT here you are incorrect as the correct side of the road is the left and always has been.
In the UK if you pull to the side of the road and put your striple on the sidestand it leans away from passing traffic.
It also means my sword hand is ready to deal with oncoming highwaymen and footpads!

Oh, come on. Do you really think I'm arguing logic here with a statement like, "left and wrong"? I understand the historical precedent for wrong hand drive but I believe the world backs me up 2 to 1 that right hand is superior.

As for antogonizing or arguing with a moderator. I welcome it. I do not mod by my emotions. Well I try not to but I am human after all well at least some people think I am.

I have nothing at all against driving on the right side-do it lots on trips to continental europe-learned the art in my wild youth, practising on the way home from the pub!
I doubt whether MacBandit is the kind of guy who would be antagonised by my post. I mod on a different forum and have some experience of what antagonises.....

ok well here is something related i think

Me - driving in to work today..
See HArley guy with babe on back
Me -Zoom past Harley guy with babe on back
Harley Guy pulls up next lane with babe on back.. at red light..
HArley Guy (loudly so I can hear): "You put those lights on yourself?"
Me - "No they come stock"
Harley Guy "They come stock??"
Me - "Yup!"
Harley Guy and Babe both look inpressed
Me - Zoom off with Harley Guy's babe on my back seat..

Well the last part was made up but my point is this:

People love those twin round spotties! What can I say. I don't think he could reconcile the 2 looks right away, retro and sport.

I love it! lol

Also - I am sure it bridges the gap between Crusier, Street, and Sport

I get the salut from all classes when riding which gives me a kick. Some groups up here can be very selective.

If I had the new lights I think I'd be lumped in with the other rice burners and not anything else - I don't know.. :p

I know I'll be doing a transplant the other way when I upgrade to a STR or S3 (speed)

I have done the transplant, mainly because I got the lights for way less than the OP. The whole light kit x2 lights, backing plate etc from Triumph cost me £65 I also bought the new screen too £135.

The bike work is non destructive so can go back to round if need be.

Havent had chance to get the screen colour matched yet. I really like the look. Looks more mean! lol
