SAI bypass (again)

Hi Team,
I've read all the posts on SAI and popping. I have the Trident track mufflers with half pipe on an 08 S3. I've had the dealer TORS tune. According to Peter at Trident, they use this setup although from the posts, some prefer the Arrow 3-1 map.

I have been told, too lean, too rich, just right. A past post from Peter / Trident said it's a little rich and as a result produces some fuel in the exhaust resulting in a bang. However, this little rich condition is very slight and will not damage the motor. Peters assessment seems logical to me. I once blew a hole in a piston running too lean so this is fine with me!

I don't like the really big pops that go off like a cannon when I chop the throttle (I know "Then don't do that").

I understand that bypassing the SAI will cure this. Is it just a simple matter of plugging the hose and keeping the solenoid attached to fool the computer?

Thanks for the info. Tinkering is too much fun to not do it.

Yes, the hole in the VERY front of the airbox can be plugged and then slide the hose and clamp back over it. This will eliminate the MAJORITY of all popping.

I did this at first with a LOT of electrical tape. Worked well at first then the tape started to give way and the popping returned. Then i did it right with a well fitted rubber stopper, 2 washers and a bolt to secure it in there well.

Whatever you do make sure it is plugged WELl and make sure it won't get dislodged over time.

I took your advice and plugged the SAI at the air box. One small goof on my part. When I removed the gas tank, I got the two vent hoses mixed up. One has some kind of filter or check valve on it, the other does not.

I looked everywhere in the shop manual and could not find anything on which one goes to the outside of the tank and which goes to the inside. Found the answer on another post attached photo/

I'll let you know how the SAI bypass works next time I go for a ride. Big T storm now, can't go for a putt. :(

I agree, but I live in The Peoples Republic of Massachusetts. They have a law for everything here and the cops take notice of the cannon shot when slowing down. "Loud pipes save lives"
