This past weekend I had to see a man about a gun. This would be my wife's cousin Joe who lives up in the open spaces past Hollister, CA, about 400 miles North of Los Angeles - a perfect excuse to get out and ride.

The 'Package':

Cowboy hats are like hemorrhoids- sooner or later every a-hole will get one and I'm no exception. Actually that was Cousin Joe's hat, added for effect. And no, I'm not implying you are anything but a gentleman, Joe.

Cousin Joe's neck of the woods is wide open and wild - Lots of grassland. No country for old men. That sort of thing. Joe's going to be getting a dual-sport soon to fully enjoy his surroundings

Riding Shotgun on a Motorcycle Part 2

On the way up I stayed at my favorite KOA, the one near the beautiful Santa Margarita Lake. I'm a cabin guy and this one was as nice as they come, complete with a bed with a soft mat, and a heater to boot - It was 42F/6C in the morning.

On the homebound ride I took Highway 25 for a while. Very nice. At one point I was up on a ridge looking into the greenest valley I'd ever seen outside of Oregon and there are 2 horsemen driving about 30 head of cattle up the valley. I know - I should have stopped for a photo.
Here's a shot from Bitterwater Road, just off Highway 25.

I didn't stop for the night on the way home. I spent a nice 9 hours on the bike, a very pleasant day except for the leg pain from the stock seat. I used that seat to help with the luggage. I prefer the Contemporary usually fitted to the bike as it doesn't dig into the thighs causing Deep Vein Thrombosis. (DVT) I'm thinking of selling my Scrambler Solo Seat so I left that home too.

In King City I got the feeling I was being used and abused:

With the 19 tooth front sprocket the bike was cool, calm, and collected, running around 4000 RPM at around 70 MPH / 113KPH (That's around 74MPH showing on speedo). And, after 870 miles, I've got bike, bags, and blaster safely returned to the garage.

A big thanks to Cousin Joe for his hospitality, his Beck's, his excellent steaks, and his 870 Express. :beerchug
