On my 2015 STR I changed batteries and the check engine light came on. It cleared itself after 3 heat cycles. I couldn’t figure that one either.

 

Ahhh, I've only started it (and rode around the block) once... turned the ignition on and off maybe once more than that. So, maybe it'll clear itself...

 

Did you reset the time and date after connecting the battery (if it has a date function)?
That's probably triggered the service wrench icon.

 

No, I started it, moved out to the driveway and noticed the wrench. Figured it was because the battery had been removed for a while and thought maybe riding it around the block would make it go out. It didn't. Noticed the time was off to (which was to be expected). Came back in the garage, shut it off. Turned the ignition back on and set the date and time.

At this point, it sounds like after a couple heat cycles, it'll reset itself. More than likely, due to not going anywhere until Wednesday, it'll get cleared by the dealer when I get the oil changed.

 

Happened to me as well. Dealer can clear it although it will clear itself after several heat cycles. In my case bike was to go in for a service so dealer cleared it. There was no fault code.

 

The service reminder wrench is not the same as a check engine light. If you remove the battery it will reset the date on the dash to the year 2000 I believe. Go into your dash and change the date.

 

Just to be clear, it is the wrench icon and I have already reset the date and the time. I just went out to the garage and double checked, the wrench icon is still there and the date and time are correct.

 

Ok, the service reminder light will need to be reset at the dealer then unfortunately. Does it say service overdue when you turn the key on? It is set based on mileage and also time (1 year). You can ignore it for the time being and have it reset next time you bring the bike in for service/recalls.

 

Nope nothing about service overdue. I thought about the service due thing too and checked, it's still due Jan 2021 and in however many days that is from now.

I'm betting it's some sort of failsafe or something for when the bike loses power for an extended period of time. I'm taking it in for an oil change Wednesday, so I won't be riding it till then, but I wonder if I was to ride it a few times the wrench would reset itself on it's own. We'll see what the dealer says and I'll post what the "official" word is.

 

I had the same thing happen to me on my new 2019 Street Triple LRH. After battery disconnect I noticed the clock and date was off. After adjusting the date and time the service warning came on shortly after. I found that I could reset it. Pressing the home button to access the main menu, I forget exactly but it was either with the clock or date adjust menu that I could reset the service. The service warning is gone now. It's set to Jan 2021. I haven't reached the 500 mi service yet but figure the service warning will get a restart then. Apparently, if you disconnect your battery you'll throw off your service interval monitoring. I'm new to this bike and learning as I go. There may be more to it than I've discovered yet.

 

Welp, I went to the dealer today like I mentioned and they said that happens if you disconnect the power (long enough?).

I was having them change the oil and give it a once over before my trip in a week and a half. They reset it as part of what they did. They also said there was an update to the ECU which they installed.

 

I had the battery out of my 2020 Street Triple RS today for nearly an hour. No problem.
The manual says you can remove the battery and gives no indication of warning lights or time limits.
I had to reset the date but the service date remained.
So I think you're supposed to be ok... but gremlins.

It was out for approximately 30 minutes. Now, with the battery back in and everything back together, the wrench icon is showing. The bike and everything runs fine.

I'm heading to the dealer Wednesday for an oil change and to give the bike a once over before my road trip later this month, so I'll have them clear it. I'm just curious if anyone has heard or experienced this. Seems kinda strange. I've removed batteries from vehicles before (car and motorcycle) and never had a service light come on after.

Just changed the battery on my 955i Tiger and the same thing happened. The computer reads a voltage drop and activates the "check engine light." The battery is fully charged.

Chances are that's the problem. The only dealer in my state charges $30-60 to "clear codes." It seems like a ripoff but when they are the only game in town, you don't have much choice.

Motorcycle plug-ins are different for each brand and are different than car plug-ins so you can't go to O'Reilly's and get the code cleared and reset.

 

Try using it for a few heat cycles. Based on what some people in this thread have said, that cleared it for them.

But, ya, if that doesn't do it, I had the same thought (about it being a ripoff) if I had to go to the dealer and pay.

Did you reset the calendar and clock to current time and date?

It's all taken care of now. Dealer cleared it when they did the oil.

 

have had service light on after for a couple months...no amount of heat cycles, resetting clocks or fiddlying with the menus will clear it...i've learned to ignore it.

 

Triumph have used the industry standard 16 pin female OBDII connector since 1997. It's the same connector as is used on most OBDII compliant cars. Some manufacturers (KTM and Piaggio for example) use a smaller plug but plenty of adapters available. Not entirely sure where you got your information about 17 pin and 14 connectors but it's incorrect.

 

Thanks for the correction. The info I posted was what the service writer at the Triumph Dealership told me. Maybe he was feeding me a line so I'd think I have to go to them for everything. I have a friend that runs an auto repair shop. I'll have to drop in and see if his OBDII fits my Triumph.

If you just want to read fault codes and reset the MIL on your 955i Tiger a basic diagnostic code reader is invaluable. This is the one I have, it plugs straight into the 16pin OBDII plug under the seat.
