OBD Code P1690 on T-100

Hi,

A few days ago, my air cooled 2015 Bonneville T-100 showed the check engine orange light.

I connected an OBD reader that displayed code P1690.

In another post, Forchetto says that error code is an ECU communication failure, here:
https://www.triumphrat.net/air-cooled-twins-technical-talk/505690-p1690.html

Bike seems to run fine, speedometer, revs meter, etc works fine.

Right after this failure, the bike also suddenly failed to start one day. A single click sound.
The bike has been sitting in the garage for months without using it, it's true.
So I jump started it, and it started up fine, rode a bit to charge it up.

My questions:
- Might the P1690 code be due to the faulty/drained/weak battery?
- If so, is it OK for me to try and clear the error from the bike, and see if up pops up again?
- Or should I just take it straight to the dealer to have them review the bike?

Thanks in advance.

So this didn't quite fix the problem, and there must be a cabling problem somewhere.
Now I can't start the bike. This is what I did:

- Reset the OBD P1690 code.
- Started and rode bike, everything works fine.
- Noticed that the engine light came back on, and the P1690 code too.
- I noticed the set of cables with electrical tape under the handle bar, left hand side that go to the headlamp (and from there to the displays), the tape there was a bit peeled off (feels the cables were touching the left fork for a while).
- I pressed with my finger the cable set (bonded with electrical tape), and noticed that the RPM and speed gauges went to zero (while I was riding). If I pressed it again they would go back up. The bike still worked.
To try fix this, I thought that because of the peeled electrical tape, there might have been a disconnected or broken cable underneath, so:

- I took out all the electrical tape in that small area, and noticed that the cables are all perfectly fine.
- After doing this, the bike would now not start.
- Tried to jump start, didn't work.
- The sound the bike usually makes when you first switch the key on (like it's setting up something in the front), does not happen now.

I am pretty certain I did not do anything to the cables, and they are pretty much in the same state as before, but something *has* happened.
I taped everything back on, and there is no peel now, but the bike doesn't start.

Question:
Is there some kind of switch, or relay or something I need to reset to have it come back up?
I need to at least take it to the dealer shop.

Thanks

You have a broken crimp joint inside the wiring harness. This always happens with the CANbus models (electronic speedo with the LCD display) and there are many threads on here with this problem. It doesn't seem to happen with models older than about 2011.

Inside the wiring harness there are about 5 crimp joints in the area that passes the steering head, and they tend to break from the constant movement of the steering. Each joint is wrapped in blue tape. The only way to fix them is to take off a section of the outer tape of the harness, find all the crimp joints and remake them. If your bike is under warranty the dealer would replace the entire wiring harness, but if not its very expensive for you to do that so the best way out is to fix it yourself.

P1690 is 'CANbus error', which means that communication has been lost on the CANbus wires and the speedo cannot communicate with the ECU, therefore the bike will not run.
