Kick Stand Failure

I was on a nice trip to VT and on the way home the kick stand seemed to give way, but I never did let the bike drop. I just get off slowly and then use the center stand. We looked at the stand but couldn't really see anything bent. I did see two bolts with star heads. I am wondering if they were loose and the stand rotated enough to make the bike now lean WAY over when weight is put on the stand. I will call the dealer today. I don't want to mess anything up but I am going to try those star bolts.

Anyone had this problem? This is on a new 2014 Scram.

Never heard of that happening before. When I had a guy back into my bike the kick stand was strong enough to not only bend but also twist the lower left frame tube as well. Bike was pushed about a foot but never fell.

If it can survive that mush force to physically bent the frame tube I don't see the stand itself just giving way. Curious to see what is wrong that it would suddenly no longer support the bike correctly out of te blue like that:confused:

I believe the quality of the metal used is inferior. This sidestand is not even close to the sturdiness of the one on my '06. I checked the frame and it doesn't look tweaked. I didn't hit anything but the bike went right over. It is probably just a defective stand. Out of all the bikes they put out having one go bad seems reasonable just not anticipated.

Based on my knowledge of a 2009 Bonnie A1, there are a nut and bolt that retain the side stand. The bolt is used to hold the side stand in place, while the locknut keeps the bolt in place. My locknut apparently vibrated loose but, fortunately, the bolt did not come out before I noticed it.
You might want to check if the locknut is still in place, and what the story is with the bolt, if it isn't.

I was getting off the bike and did not have my weight on it. This is my 5th Triumph and the first time this has happened. It is my ninth bike overall and this has never ocurred before. I was not sitting on the bike jumping up and down and making vroom vroom noises.

Your highlight is how I get off the bike now that the side stand problem has occurred. No sense trying to explain how a person gets off a motorcycle and has the side stand down before they totally dismount. This is not rider error and I am suprised as anyone.

Hey, I do this all winter on my side stand. It is called day dreaming. Besides, it better hold my weight because sometimes I sit on the bike to read maps, enjoy the view, wipe a large dead bug from my visor or other motorcycle activities that are best done sitting on you bike while it is on it's kick stand. I even sit on it side saddle by the side of the road to wait for buddies, eat an energy bar, read maps, etc...

Vroom, vroom, oh wait a minute, it warm and dry, time for kick stand up.

I took the bike to the dealer today and we compared my Scram to one on the show room floor. The kick stand on mine is indeed bent. They ordered a new one under warranty. It took all of 10 minutes to determine it but until you compare the two it is not obvious.

It is forged but the metal is not as beefy as on my 2006 Scram. The bike leans over pretty far. I can bend it back with pressure but that is not the solution I am looking for. The metal is distressed and it will fail again. I thought the stand had sunk into warm blacktop in the parking lot but it had just given way. I had two witnesses and one does some work for the dealer. We were dumbfounded. I love the bike but this stand was a fluke. Maybe the metal used in the process isn't as dense, it defintely has flex to it. The stands on all my prior bikes did not flex like this one.

That is a great piece of info Skidplate865. Now when my new kickstand arrives will the dealer have the bolt? I hope the stand comes with the bolt. I was going to bend it back in shape but since the bike is under warranty I wanted the dealer to see it. Maybe the weak link is the bolt and not the stand.

As it turns out it was neither the stand nor bolt. The tab that is welded to the frame bent/twisted. The dealer is submitting pictures to Triumph to have the subframe piece with the tab replaced. It must have been either a substandard weld or density in the metal at that stress point. The bike rides fine so I just get off carefully and deploy the center stand w/o messing with side stand. At least I have my '06 to ride when they have me bring it back to fix it.
I love the bike but these things happen I guess from time to time. As long as Triumph covers it under warranty I have no issue.
