Anyone know where I can find a photographed teardown sequence for the keihin cvk carbs? Or an exploded diagram? I just want to know what goes where before I start poking and prodding.

Another thing I'm interested in is the specs for how the carbs connect to the manifolds; I'm thinking mikuni flatslides might be in my future and I don't really like the idea of a "kit" without knowing what's -really- in the kit.

I can tell you that the 42mm kit from Bonneville Performance is as complete as they come. The only thing the kit lacks is intake couplings. He will also remove things and discount them towards the kit. For example K&N cone filters, if you already have them he would remove and credit you kit price $60, or whatever. Bill Gately is ultra-pro customer too, and he really treats people the way that he would want to be treated if he was a customer.

If you have anymore questions I will be happy to answer them for you.

removing the bowl, with the carb in place?

Does anybody know if it is possible / advisable to remove the float bowls / carb bottoms, with the carbs on the bike?

The reason I ask is that the left side drain screw is messed up (by previous owner). I assume that it will be easier to change the drain screw with the bowl off the carb. Obviously, there would be a need for something to catch the fuel coming out (rags). I have already orderes a new drain screw, and a new seal for the bowl.

It's no problem removing the float bowls with the carbs on the bike (it makes it easier if the previous owner installed the hex screws instead of the soft stock Phillips type).
I place a rag underneath and let the fuel drip out after shutting the petcock off.
I also use Hylomar gasket material and haven't had to replace the rubber gasket yet after numerous removals.

Thanks Shorty. Yup, turning off the fuel-flow is definitely on my check-list for the job. Probably no hex screws though :(

If you have trouble with the soft phillips screws (most of us have) here are a couple of things that might help. They're actually JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard), which is a different profile than phillips, so phillips drivers don't quite fit right, which is compounded by the fact that the screws are soft brass and the heads strip if you look at them crooked.JIS screws are identifiable by a small punch mark in between the cross slots. You can buy JIS screwdrivers from Vessel Tools. Here's a link for a nice setup that I got:

They're really not very expensive, and they are the right tool for the job. (Though before the chorus chimes in, I know a lot of people have found ways around it... I also know a lot of people haven't.)

If they strip, the slip-on damaged bolt removers from Sears work great. Much more expensive than the JIS drivers I'm afraid, but a life-saver once your screwed. (and can't get UN-screwed).

And by all means, get a set of the stainless allen heads to replace them with.

I got a cd from "fiche-man" on e-bay. Just arrived yesterday. It has all of the micro-fiche materials the dealers get but we poor wrenches never get to access. It's really got everything. Two versions of the complete shop manual (I haven't figured that one out yet... must include a newer edition... with my print version that now gives me 3 copies). Most importantly it has diagrams and part numbers for everything on the bike. You need Adobe Acrobat reader to view it, but it works great once you get that going. Up till now, Bike Bandit was the only place I could find that had decent diagrams (especially of the carbs) complete with parts numbers and the capability to order part by part. It was the ONLY place on line I could find where I could order Thruxton needles all by themselves, not as part of a kit... I know there's plenty of places that would probably accommodate you if you called them on the phone, but I really have to do my parts shopping after business hours, so I kind of need an on-line catalog. With this new micro-fiche resource I can view an exploded diagram of any assembly and get the part number for any piece. That alone is great help in understanding how it works and all goes together, but beyond that I can now send an e-mail to Baxter's (or any dealer) with a list of what I want with the right parts numbers. It's ridiculous that Triumph doesn't offer a rebuild kit for these carbs (at least, no one has ever responded when I've written asking about such a thing). Now I can make up a list of my own kit and just send all the parts numbers.
I've tried to attach a picture from the cd to show you what it's like, but I haven't been able to yet. I think there must be a way, but I haven't figured it out. Anyway, I'd like to make an unsolicited recommendation for these cds. I've seen places where you can buy the real micro-fiche, but what are you going to do with that? Go down to the library every time you want to know something? Buy your own micro-fiche reader?
