Clutch Cable reliability

From what I have read in books and over the internet, Triumph use cable operated clutch's as it cuts down weight as opposed to hydraulic operated ones. In the last 2 and half years since owning and riding my S3 I have gone through at least 2 cables, each exhibiting the same symptoms. Fraying of the cable seems to be the norm after a certain time in service and I guess this could come down to lack of grease and TLC on my part. Has anyone else neglected there cable and ended up with a crunchy, fraying clutch cable or is the problem a result of poor engineering on Triumphs part?

have you fitted any aftermarket gear such as handlebars that have changed the routing of the clutch cable, perhaps putting a sharper change of direction in the cable.

kinks or sharp bends are the major cause of clutch cable failure, (no maintenance is another)

I must say that there has been in no way any mods that would change or alter the cable's path. I did have an accident last year and the handlebar was replaced with the genuine Triumph part. Low or no maintainence could and may be the cause of the fraying so next time I will definately keep a closer eye on it. So a message to all the S3 fans out there, keep an eye on your clutch cable or suffer the same fate I have!!

I belive there was a re-call relating to clutch cables. Get in touch with your local Triumph dealer to check if your bike was affected. http://www.vosa.gov.uk/vosa/apps/recalls/default.asp RM/2001/019 dated 02/11/2001 states - The clutch control cable may fray and/or snap resulting in loss of control of the clutch mechanism. REMEDIAL ACTION-Recall affected motorcycles and fit a quality assured replacement clutch cable. VEHICLE I.D. - 089737 to 137471
good luck.... :hammer:

The Triumph cable is pure trash like alot of the bits on the bike. Its another example of where Triumph attempted to save money. I ordered a new one from Motion Pro. Great people to deal with. Now that they have made one for a 2001 Speed Triple you can order one I bet. I had to send them my old cable for a template. Now it works great. I think I spent something like ~ $ 50! Best investment I made on the triple.
