Aftermarket exhausts

MY TBS has the twin upswept silencers, and they're TOR in less than good shape (a few scratches, and more importantly the well-nuts on the top can have pulled out. It's probably not difficult to weld on M8 shoulder nuts, or a nut and penny washer combination, but I'm thinking of getting some shiny new ones.

Has anyone got the ones on UK eBay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/270889671343?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 ?

or from: www.osmc.co.uk/exhaust.htm ?

or other sources I'm not aware of?

I'm told that Triumph no longer make the standard cans, so it's aftermarket or repair.

If I may expand the question a bit, I would ask about silencers that are "socially appropriate".

I have a pair of the $350 silencers from http://www.motorcyclestore.us/triumph/accessories/retro/exhaust/

They're way louder than the thrashed TORs I took off. I enjoy a full sounding exhaust. Having your ears ring after a long ride, even when using ear plugs is a bit much.

Timbo - I can highly recommend OS Pipes. Had a pair of silencers made and they are superb quality and sound great. And being stainless steel you don't have to worry about rotting as my TOR's did. Good price as well and Roy's a lovely chap.

See the picture in my album - slightly shorter and smaller diameter than the originals which IMO look just right. Roy will make exactly what you want though.

On his site you will see my bike and other TBS's.

I agree - I phoned Roy Osbourne at OS and had a chat. He says that ÂŁ100 deposit will get the pipes made but not polished. I then ride up there, and he fits them to see if all ok. I pay the balance, and he polishes them up and posts them to me. This sounds like a good idea to me, since custom-made pipes in s/steel might be a b***er to fit if just sent mail order.

TIGERLORANGE, if you don't mind...how much did you pay for em??? and...could you ask roy how much the 3 into 3's are for a '98 tbs...? gulp.....thanks in advance....os don't use email....?
Roy at OS Pipes said the 3/3 pipes are ÂŁ900 (triple gulp). That's for the entire exhaust system back to the cylinder head.

Interestingly, Roy said that the twin upswept pipes are preferable in his opinion. He says the 3/3 pipes look nice, but are heavier. In addition, he says that the twin pipes give better low and mid-range power because he treats one pipe as a twin (two pipes going into it), and one as a single.

The twin upswept pipes for my 99 TBS cost ÂŁ390 + ÂŁ15 UK p&p if you don't collect from Stafford.

The silencers for mine were ÂŁ390, about a year ago. Which IMO was very good value for handmade silencers in stainless steel. Cheaper than TOR's, if you can find any, and don't rot away.

I don't live to far away so I left the bike with him for a day.

I was concerned as they are loud but Roy will make then quieter if you wish.

I spoke to the MOT guy beforehand and he said don't worry I have old British bikes if you want loud!

But obviously it's down to individual testers.

I'm glad you said that - I phoned Roy immediately and he'd just started cutting out the s/steel. I asked if he could make them quiet rather than fruity, and he will put in a couple of extra baffle pipes. He reckons it has little or no effect on power, but makes MOT test a cinch.

Another interesting thing from Roy: he says that the tone of the pipes changes for the better as they carbon up inside.

epco stainless. made in US. They fit the TBS header, sound great and are reasonable in price, under 400 I think. The guy will make them as quiet as you like baffled or straight through. I went through a set of DandD, British Customs and one other set aside from stock. Epco are the best IMO especiall for the dollar.

He told me that but with the amount of miles I do on the TBS I think it will be sometime before they have sooted up enough to make much difference!

They're not mega loud but are a bit louder than I wanted really so I'll see if he can quieten them down a bit. I need to contact him anyway to modify/make some pannier rails for me.

tom, i hadn't got a chance to ask you if you had all of your other modifications by the time you slid on the Epco set. Airbox obviously modded, but did your cam and jetting changes seem to be more noticeable or were they already at work improving the performance before you installed the silencers?

I went through a pile of them and I finally found the Epco guy. I was going to have him make me a set of pipes for my Ducati as well but found a used set of Tremis cheap.

I can't say enough good about the pipes, D&D, BCustoms all too loud. TOR and oem not loud enough and too restrictive. By far Epcos have best sound, and looks with high quality.

I'm not sure who is making your set in UK but look very forward to seeing them and hope they turn out well for you. My brother is in Aberdeen and sister-law (ex) in near Coventry I think. Not far from Birmingham. I was hoping for a ride there this year but seems as though Northern Thailand will win out for another brother trip in the jungle. At least the traffic will flow the same way in Thailand lol! I find it had to adjust on a bike, not bad in a car with right hooker setup.

Best of luck and post up some bike porn!

It's Roy Osbourne at http://www.osmc.co.uk/ (lots of photos of there)

I'm aiming to get the bike on the road from April - I'll pick up the pipes then and post some pix.
