Thumping Wobble on the Speed Twin 900 (2022)?

Hi all

First post here, and already such a bitter topic.
After 4 years of a hiatus, I chose a Speed Twin 900 (2022) as my bike to reenter the world of motorcycles. I am just absolutely in love with the look and the sounds.

Unfortunately, the bike has been nothing but a headache. Lots of it is due to the private seller flat out lying about the existing warranty and all.
But the biggest issue is a wobble that I started noticing on my way home from picking it up. I have done at least 10 rides on it, happens the same every time. Symptoms are:
  • Usually nothing noticeable for the first hour or so of riding
  • Thereafter, a wobble from the front starts to develop, it seems speed related, and is also there when the clutch is pulled in
  • I played with different gears at different speeds, same issue
  • It is not very consistent or reproducible. Sometimes it is frighteningly noticeable, other times it is barely there
  • It us hard to describe, but it feels like an imbalanced wheel wobble that only shows up irregularly
  • The handlebars also wobble a bit, but not significantly. It is more an up and down motion
  • When it is there, I get around 3 "wobbles" per second, give or take. Slightly more at higher speeds
  • Not super noticeable below 50 kph/30mph, but still there

I was at the Triumph dealer, and they did a quick look over the bike for chain tension and irregular lengthening, bearing issues, etc. They also did a 15 minute test ride and said they noticed nothing that isn't part of the "character of the motor". But as said, the issue develops only after a longer ride, and it really does not feel motor related.

Now, I will admit that perhaps it is part of the bike. I have owned 14 bikes in my life, mostly twins, everything from 400cc to 1200cc, and ridden a 700cc single cyclinder across Europe - I do like to believe that I can tell, even after my long absence, what is a characterful engine thump and what isn't supposed to be there. Nevertheless, perhaps this is just what the bike is like. I tested 3 other Street/Speed Twin 900s before, but never long enough to notice the same thing potentially.

Please, does anyone have any ideas? Anything that comes to mind that I could ask them to look for? Or tell me that it is indeed what the bike is like, and then I can move on?
I'll be honest, this is starting to be a deal breaker. It is mentally fatiguing to have a great ride for an hour and then realize that the 8000EUR/USD purchase is developing this issue.

EDIT: should have mentioned, the bike is fairly new, less than 3500km/2300mi. Bought it maybe 300km ago,

I have a 2020 Street Twin 900 and it is steady as a rock at all speeds.

What tires are on the bike? Brand, size, and what pressures are you running?

In general a "wobble" is a side to side movement often caused by steering head and/or swingarm bearing problems OR front to rear wheel alignment.

An "up and down" movement is usually a balance problem or out of round tire or rim or bead not seated occurring at specific speeds.

Appreciate the qucik reply!
Stock Pirelli Phantoms, recommended tire pressure per chain guard, checked before the ride.

Yea I am not happy with the "wobble" term, because it is associated with a different issue indeed. I just couldn't think of the right nomenclature, as it is too slow to be a "shaking", I guess.
All tire weights are still on there, but it has never been checked post-purchase.

More thoughts on your wobbles... there's an old adage that says "Wobble in front look at the back. Wobble in back look at the front". I'm getting old and forget a lot of this stuff I learned long ago.

I weigh about 180 pounds and found the stock shocks too harsh so I changed the spring preload to minimum. At that setting they work fine for me. No thoughts of new shocks till the OEM ones leak... then Ikon shocks for sure.

Wondering what you weigh? Take a look at the shocks and see if there's any leaking where the shaft enters the body.

When you sit on the bike does is squat down a bit, a little, or a lot?

Get someone to hold your bike upright and push down hard on the rear of the seat.
Does it return a little slow or spring right back up?
All spring and no dampening is a wobble waiting to happen.

I had the Pirelli Phantoms on my 2022 T120, tires were almost like new with less than a few thousand miles on them, and I had a wobble and the bike rode worse than I realized. It wasn’t until I took them off at about 6000 miles that I realized how bad they made the bike ride, I put Michelin’s on and it’s like a new motorcycle. Change those tires, doesn’t matter if they look like new, they’re junk in my opinion.

I was going to say also front rim, as if the PO walloped a curb or something, but that would be more noticable visually and always there. Now that I've reread your post, I'm still thinking that the PO walloped a curb or something but the tire carcass has been damaged. This could only show up with expansion from heat. It could also explain his motive for selling it.

The michelin tires are not recommend for your year of bike. I have a 23 ST900 and had them installed on my bike. The front tire developed a bounce ( turned out to be out of round ), rim was fine. In truth my view is that the tire wasn't mounted on the rim properly. But that being said, checking both the Triumph and Michelin sit, Michelin tires are only recommended for the 24 and newer models. They actually show serial numbers and anything below 5000 ( last 4 digits ) they were not recommended and above 5000 the Michelins where recommended. I wasn't able to find out why but I think it must have had something to do with the rim. Not sure what if anything they changed, but something changed, just my two cents.

I just noticed that Triumph approves of a radial front tire for the Street Cup but not for Street or Speed Twins. (Assuming triumphtechnicalinformation.com is a Triumph approved site.)

The radial that's listed isn't the Spirit ST but rather the Storm 3D X-M so I assume that was the one Triumph tested or had Avon test for them.
