Good afternoon all! I currently ride a '17 R III Roadster and am looking to add a Scrambler 1200XE to the pen. I'm looking for info, experiences, pros/cons, recommendations, etc. Any and all comments or info welcome.
That's interesting that you came from a T100. Before I got the 1200XE I had my choices down to the T100, or the T120. I can't handle bikes that tilt you forward -- too much pressure on my wrists and it's uncomfortable overall -- even though I love how the Thruxton looks. Anyway, took a chance on the 1200XE because of the height, but love it. It's a keeper.I got a 2019 Scrambler XE a month ago after several years on a T100. I have used it for a few long-distance camping trips already both solo and 2up. I really love the bike.
- Powerful and zippy on the highway. Added a Unit Garage tall windscreen and a sheepskin seat cover and I am comfortable riding this thing for hours.
- Brakes quick and I appreciate the traction control and ABS.
- It is so, so fun off-road. As others have said not a dirt bike but I have taken this thing down gnarly steep roads with my girl on the back and it is totally capable even with all our camping gear. Suspension feels like a dream on the big bumps, and the bike is remarkably stable in both mud and deep sand.
- I get lots of compliments on this bike.
Couple of known issues I was able to work around:
- Luggage options weren’t as bad as I expected. I got unit garage pannier racks and Mosko soft bags as well as an Atlas rear rack, and it’s more than adequate.
- Exhaust heat. I put some heat-reflective tape on the heat shields and a decatted exhaust and it’s not a big deal.
My sole complaint is the keyless ignition which has already left me fiddling in the middle of nowhere. However I’m finding out the tricks to wake the bike up when needed, and it is kinda nice to never leave my key in an ignition.
Barring any potential long-term maintenance issues I may never look into another bike. I’m also 6’-2” with a long inseam so the size is great for me.
