Front wheel compatibilities

Hi there,

I’ve damaged the front wheel rim of my 2005 ST when I hit a pothole. i’m now looking for a replacement.

I have found a 2012 ST front wheel which looks like it will fit but it’s a five hour ride away and I don’t trust my front tire to make it so I’m going to have to buy it and hope it fits. So I’ve come here hoping that someone can tell me if the 2012 ST front wheel is compatible with my 2005 ST.

I love my sprint and couldn’t bear to think I can’t ride it for a while.

Thanks for any information.

Cheers from Australia

How damaged is the wheel? If just a ripple and the wheel still runs true and the tyre bead still good then why replace it. I've been running my '06 with a bent rim from a pothole encounter for about 16 years with no issues. Through multiple tyre changes it has never leaked air.

Have you tried contacting this company or a similar one?

If you have access to a picture of the 2012 wheel, check to see whether the rotor bolts are located:
1/ close to the hub (like your 2005 bike) or,
2/ part way up the spokes.
The GT's introduced the latter type (bolt-holes on spokes) and latter STs (after 2011) may have these as well.
The GT type wheels need different rotors (because of the bolt-hole location) however the axles/forks/brake calipers on the GTs are (almost) the same as the STs (nothing significant except heavier springs and coated brake pistons) and the wheel+rotor combinations of GT and ST are cross compatible. I have personally checked that an ST front wheel will fit on a GT by experimenting with my ST and a friends GT. (Note that GT rear wheels will not fit on a ST 4-pin axle, but a GT 5-pin axle will fit in an ST hub).

Also note that Speed Triple 2005-2008 wheels (front and rear) are identical to Sprint 1050 2005-2010.
The next gen Speed Triple wheels (approx 2009-2010) known as the 'flower petal wheels') are also the same dimensions as the early Sprint ST wheels.
The gen after that (2010+) changed front axle diameter (25mm->20mm) and rear wheel width (5.5->6.0).
Although the 05-10 Speed Triple front wheels are the same size the Speed Triples have a greater rotor offset due to the calipers being bolted to upside down forks. So if you go down this path keep your Sprint rotors.

I found the above info while working out what Forged wheels I could fit to my Sprint. In the end I ordered wheels to fit a Speed Triple 05-10 which fit perfectly.

cheers Keef.

These are pics of a GT wheel/rotor. I took these after I ordered some EBC rotors and one was a bright gold and the other was a dull gold. After many years they’ve faded to the same color, fyi.
thanks so much for the photo. Mine is definitely NOT like that. It only has one ring of bolts probably where the slatted ring is. Much closer to the axle. I’ve ordered one now and it definitely doesn’t look like that. I’ve attached a photo.
