1998 sprint exec 900 idle problems

So i recently purchased said bike and found it had been sitting for four years. With some time i was able to get the bike running by cleaning the carbs and replacing fluids. But at that point the bike didn't feel like it was giving its full potential. So i took it to triumph and had them "rebuild and sync the carbs", replace the plugs and replace the air filter with a K&N. From seeing other posts i now know K&N isn't the best choice but i don't really believe that would cause my problem. I went through the coils and found that i was getting 1 ohm across the primary and the secondary was a little over a mega ohm? that does not sound right either. and the spark plug wires are fine.

What is wrong here?

Off the line the bike stumbles and at high RPMs the bike screams without hesitation. The only way i can get moving while avoid being a hood ornament is to wind the bike up and fry my clutch a little bit every time.

Please help me. I like this bike and would rather keep it.

Probably coils

Hello and welcome. Great bike you have there. How many miles on her? How"s it look? What color? What are they going for these days?

Sounds like you took the right route with the tune up, nothing wrong with the K&N. Been running one over a decade now, no problem. You probably still have the stock coils. They are probably Gills from England. Cause of most "stumbling " on acceleration. Replace these with Nology ($70 each) or PVL coils from Triumph (much more each).

Gill, PVL... I don't think it makes much difference who made the coils, people have seen both kinds fail pretty frequently. I forget the specs, but your symptoms sure do sound like a coil failing.

The Nology coils are the same PVL part Triumph uses. I think the model number you want is 152 001 060, but call to be sure. 0.6Ω is what you want.

The coils I had problems with were PVLs. I suspect the real problem is that they get cooked by heat from the motor due to their positioning, but I haven't tested that scientifically. At any rate, the Gills don't seem to be available anymore, and a new set of PVLs should cure the problem for a decent amount of time.

I went through and replaced all three coils. Before hand there was a lack of power on the low end and rough idling. Sure enough after putting three new nology coils in she is an entirely different animal. It is practically a rocket taking off. Now mind you i just got rid of my 500 not too long ago, which was fast in its own right. But this, this bike is awesome now. So much so that in the first week with the new coils i had an encounter on three separate occasions with the cops. Two tickets, one point and one warning. The "not really a problem" problem is that it is so smooth winding through the gears that by the time i hit forth i am already past the speed limit. And that is what i meant by needing :motorbike2 to stay away from the cops.
