Hi folks, I got given this QD rear drum, I've not seen them with breather holes like this before. Anyone know what was up with this? Some kind of racing modification for cooling???

Hi Brett,
no Triumph logos
Neither Meriden nor Small Heath cast QD drums, the name of the caster escapes me right now, better-known for making lawnmowers (not Atco) ...

The holes were definitely cast in
Uh-uh. "1040" is part of the Triumph part number (W1040) for a standard '63-'70 46-tooth QD drum. I speculate the holes were bored for an off-road special, so any water entering the drum fording a river, say, drained out quickly.

Hth.

Hi Stuart, it was definitely cast with the holes originally. Same w1040 part number appears on the mid-50s pre-unit manuals too.

But I think you are right. I'm going to tell everyone it came from a custom istd bike of the '50s 😉🤣
