Distinguished Gentleman's Ride

Hi all,

Sunday 29th September is yet again the DGR, are any of you doing it?

This year I ended up logging in at the Lleida one as originally the Reus ride did not exist, not looking forward to riding around the narrow streets coming down from the citadel in the old part of the city, but it has to be done.

As last year, most of the riders here in Spain (on this ride anyway) do not seem to have even made a donation for the charities involved, just going for the ride, perhaps there should be a registration fee of say 10 euros/pounds/dollars minimum. What is your consensus about that?

I think the goal of rasing awareness should be coming before the one of raising funds.

So, if the event attracts a lot of bikers (perhaps thanks to a "free entry" policy), it is more likely to be picked up by media and as a consequence raise awareness, which in turn may lead to donations outside the event itself.

Also, once you start to ask for money tied to an event, it becomes a little more difficult w.r.t. income and taxes and public security notification and right of assembly, etc. which likely would limit the number of cities covered worldwide.

I'm very happy about the initiative and going in Zurich.

This will be the 2nd year that I've ridden in the DGR ó both years in the Orange County California ride. Last year I ended up in 4th place on the OC fundraising leaderboard. This year I'm in 2nd place with a pretty good chance of staying there.

Last year we had more than 500 riders registered, but quite a few of 'em didn't even sponsor themselves. The ride itself was almost unmanageable due to it's size, so this year they did put a $25 minimum to register (same for the Los Angeles ride) and there are significantly fewer registered riders this year.

As far as I know, they only did this for rides that were getting too large. The ride organizer admits that there's no way to separate the registered from the unregistered riders on ride day, though.

The photo below is from last year's ride. From left to right is JC (co-founder of the Movember Foundation), 1st place, 3rd place, and 4th place on the leaderboard which means that's me on the right. 2nd place either wasn't there or didn't want to be in the photo.
