Some backstage Comments from Bonneville

I posted a YouTube link below that has some detail of what is was like to run at the Bonneville Salt Flats this year.

This year wasn't too exciting because the course was covered by a down pour of water a day or two before the competition was due to start.

The organizers and racers had to make a lot of late adjustments, but like I said racing at Bonneville racing is pretty cool anytime.

Thanks Frank. As you can tell I'm not very proficient in putting together a video. However, in 2021 when I go back I want to take a crew member whose job will be is to create a nice video.

I offered three spots on the crew for 2021 to members on this site and I am hoping that I can get three that will come.

My nephew came from Vermont to help out this year. I met a 71 year old guy this year running in the 100cc class who wanted to set a record. It seems for years he supported his wife's attempts before she ran off with another guy from another racing team. Cool guy and he not only broke the record but nearly doubled it...great.

Video is tough! I do corporate video work and it is harder than it looks.

Glad to hear the guy smashed the record!

You've been completely honest about numbers in your pursuit of top speed on the salt, and if it's not too crass to ask I'm really curious, what do the organizers at Bonneville charge you to do what you did, to see how fast you can go?...recognizing the admission fee is just the beginning.

NRC FEK, Pazzo levers, CRG lanesplitter mirrors, BC blinkers, Rizoma reservoir, DID gold chain.

At the risk of being labeled a total loon, I'll break it down. Some costs are optional.

The actual cost the SCTA/BNI is not bad - $560 registration, $85 BNI membership, $25 log book, $10 riders handbook.

The other stuff like hotels, generators, vehicle passes, crew passes, canopies, bike preparation, etc. are the real costs.

I generally pay for crew hotel, entrance, vehicle gas, meals and drinks on Salt. You need a trailer and a cb radio, gear etc.

I haven't added up my cost for this trip yet but for one bike the total will be $8000 to $10,000. The cost is why I can't go every year.

Once you have the generators, canopies etc the next trip is cheaper.

I hope that answers some questions. I never thought I would do it more than once but I'm now planning for my sixth time in 2021.

The crew donates their time and covers their breakfast and supper. We stay in nice Casino rooms.

I appreciate your honesty. Doesn't make you a loon to have passion, at least by my lights. I think most people looking at this endeavour imagined it costs a bit. There is a surreal beauty to those images you shared and thanks for giving us some idea of what it feels like.

I’ve driven from Reno to Steamboat Springs, CO and back many times. Stayed once in Wendover at the Peppermill.
