You've been completely honest about numbers in your pursuit of top speed on the salt, and if it's not too crass to ask I'm really curious, what do the organizers at Bonneville charge you to do what you did, to see how fast you can go?...recognizing the admission fee is just the beginning.
At the risk of being labeled a total loon, I'll break it down. Some costs are optional.
The actual cost the SCTA/BNI is not bad - $560 registration, $85 BNI membership, $25 log book, $10 riders handbook.
The other stuff like hotels, generators, vehicle passes, crew passes, canopies, bike preparation, etc. are the real costs.
I generally pay for crew hotel, entrance, vehicle gas, meals and drinks on Salt. You need a trailer and a cb radio, gear etc.
I haven't added up my cost for this trip yet but for one bike the total will be $8000 to $10,000. The cost is why I can't go every year.
Once you have the generators, canopies etc the next trip is cheaper.
I hope that answers some questions. I never thought I would do it more than once but I'm now planning for my sixth time in 2021.
The crew donates their time and covers their breakfast and supper. We stay in nice Casino rooms.
