First Service.

My new Speed Twin is getting close to the mileage recommended for the first service 800km. Wondering how crucial it is more for warranty than anything else.
I have some options but mileage will be a good bit higher by the time I can get to any of the dealers for a service. Nearest dealer is 160km although I donít think they have the full diagnostics ( will check ), second one was where I bought it but Iíd prefer to avoid them 220km away, the third one would be my preference to deal with 330km away.
Question is Iíd really like to get out on this engaging bike but I donít want to stray too far over service mileage for fear of it affecting the warranty. Any thoughts?

I was told by my dealer 1000-1200km is fine. If you need to go longer change the oil and filter yourself?

That first service is a rip-off. For some reason I had it done for my Speed and regretted it as soon as I saw the bill. I did it myself for my Street Twin and never had any warranty issues.

The first service really is about changing the oil and filter, as a new motor is breaking in or wearing in new parts which causes metal particals of metal to wear as it runs in so the first 500 miles is where most of the metal particals from the rings bedding in so its important to change the oil and filter from that run in period to get rid of the those particals from the rings bedding in.
If you can't get to your dealer at that time or a little over but not to far over do the oil and filter, its the most important thing to do as part of run in, all the dealers do is oil and filter, the rest of the first service is to go over the bike to make sure nuts and bolts are tight, adjust cables for any slackness and to make sure everything is right and things adjusted right, test ride it to make sure things are smooth and right.
Doing it yourself does not affect your warranty as long as your record it in your service book that its been done, you don't need your dealer stamp in your book to effect your warranty as long as its been done.
My dealer has no problems with me doing my own service as long as its beeb done.

First Service.

I changed my own oil and filter for the first service but I still took it to the dealer to have it scanned and have the maintenance icon reset. Turned out there was a software update that made the drive by wire better. $50 and 30 min later I was out and about with a better bike.

Surely the first service is free so no rip off? Mine was anyway.

Some dealers offer first service labour free. My dealer offered nothing, and in doing so lost any future business from me. Unfortunate, but itís highly unlikely that they will ever see the bike again.

Well if they will clear the spanner icon at a reasonable cost I might visit but donít think Iíll be wasting a day going to the dealers just to get it removed.
Iím looking more at the road than the clocks.......... This is the first bike Iíve had with a gear indicator and itís annoying me cause I keep glancing at it.

If it was free would I be complaining about it? I literally said the first service is a rip-off.

Nice for you that it was free.
