I just got a new Scrambler 1200 XE about a month ago. It's coming up on it's break in service and I've got about 550 miles on it.
In the time that I've owned it, I've gotten the following warnings 3 times while riding it:
OCABS Disabled
OCTC Disabled
Both the TC and ABS warning lights stay on
From my googling, the only thing I can find is a mention of OCABS on a revzilla review which mentions that feature is Optimized Cornering ABS and Optimized Cornering Traction Control, so I"m assuming it has something to do with the IMU lean sensitive features on the bike.
These always come together and they always happen when I am out riding. If I stop and turn the bike off and back on again, they go away. However, today I got the warning 2 times (out of the total 3 times since I've owned the bike). It happened once on my ride. I stopped at a gas station, turned the bike off and back on again, and then they were gone. Then on the way home, they happened again. I got a picture of them this time and will be showing them to my dealer during my break in service.
However, I was wondering if anyone had seen these warnings on the Scramber 1200 yet or if they have seen them on any other bikes.
First up, take your bike to the dealer. It’s probably nothing and will go away ones the errors are cleared. If it’s more than that, it could well be a faulty IMU. Either way, new bike, take it back ASAP.
Only other Triumph with OCABS/OCTC is the Tiger 1200 (and last Explorer). Maybe hop into that forum to see if anyone has experienced something similar.
Yeah I'm planning to have them look into it next weekend during my break in service. Since it seems to clear itself when I turn the bike off, I'm not super confident it will be something that they can just clear the errors for. But I could be wrong.
I searched the site and did a fair bit of googling on the topic and haven't come up with anything else.
The light going off doesn’t mean the error is cleared, it means it’s not interfering with anything at that time. The error will still be logged and the light will come again each time it is triggered. I’d say there’s an excellent chance that once the error is cleared, that will be it. The fact it goes out is actually a good sign that it’s not mission critical.
I've had it happen to mine about twice in the first 500km. But I was riding in slush/dirt/snow, the dealer said it sometimes happens when the sensors are dirty. Since it hasn't snowed, I've ridden in dirt/mud and though when offroad I'm in Offroad pro mode (which disabled both), when I put it in road modes, the errors don't reappear. I don't know for sure what fixed it, but it seems to be gone for good now The dealer will indeed be able to see the error log upon the first service.
Just had my 500 mile service done yesterday. Part of that was diagnosing this issue. Supposedly they updated all the software. However, they charged me for it and I'm going to have to work on getting that money back. I didn't notice it before I left but when I looked I saw that I got charged for something that should be covered under warranty.
However, there is bad news. On my ride today, the same warning lights came back. So whatever they did, didn't fix the issue. I have a ticket open with Triumph and emails out to the service department but they aren't back in until Tuesday. Not very pleased about this as I'm sure it will eat a pretty significant portion into my summer riding season...
When it does happen (until it's fixed, which they should under warranty), you can just stop on the side of the road, turn off the engine, and restart, chances are you'll be good for the rest of the ride. Sucks, but at least you'll have ABS.
Happened to me OCABS light. 1200 XE 800 miles. Live 300 miles from a dealer. But then sounds like dealer didn't solve problem anyway. I've ridden in dirt and bike is fairly dirty, but when it happened I was in unmodified Road mode on street pushing it in the corners some and getting a little lean angle. So maybe when the lean angle sensor is triggered ABS and TC are disabled? Doesn't sound right. Anyway rather than turn bike off I stopped, in neutral, and went into menu and enabled ABS and TC which had been enabled but had become disabled. Lights went out and hasn't happened again. But who knows. Post if you find out anything more. Thanks
Bit rude to be charged to fix a fault on a new bike that is sure to be covered by warranty and to find they haven't fixed it, myself would be making a full complaint to your dealer big time as well sending a full complaint to Triumph HQ, its one of the reasons we buy new to be covered by warranty, I know my dealer wouldn't charge me to fix a fault when the bike is still covered by warranty and not with only 500 miles on the clock.
The dealers get fully paid for any warranty claims as well labour for fixing the problem.
Mine started like that, then all of a sudden the following stopped working:
- Cruise Control
- Gear position indicator
- Traction control would act up when it had no reason to intervene (5th gear in a straight line on dry pavement for example)
- Couldnt start the bike with the kickstand out (even in neutral)
- Check engine would be on
Turned out to be a 90$ gear position sensor (2h job to replace)
Mine's just shown up with this this morning, twice in 10 minutes. Also had it in sport mode, which I only did for the first time at the weekend. I've put it back in road and I'll swap between the 2 over the course of a few weeks to see if it comes up again, and if so, whether it's just related to sport mode.
Same just happened to me 4 days ago. Went in for first annual service and on the ride home, within 15 minutes warning lights came on for OCABS and OCTCS. Stopped bike and restarted which cleared them but 15 minutes later they came on again.
It was actually the first time I had ridden in rain mode so I waited until the weekend and tried to ride again in sports mode (in case it was mode related) and it still came on again, as it also did in normal road mode. I've been seeking out advice which is how I stumbled across this thread. I'm booked in back at the dealers for this coming weekend for them to look at it and I'll update here too. They did say on the phone they have not heard of this happening before. I'm not sure if that makes me feel good or not.
A little irritating as I'm due to be on a tour with in in the next three weeks so it had better be sorted by then, not helped by the dealer being 70 mins away. Not complaining though as it's always a nice excuse to lay down some miles
I've seen confirmation on another forum that the resolution is an IMU replacement. I'll see what the dealer says and update on here. I'm definitely not going to be opening my wallet (unless I'm buying yet more mods in there )
Rode to the dealer today and it was happening as expected en route. Workshop cleared the errors and couldn't see anything obvious. They took it for 5 miles and couldn't make the problem happen. I took the bike back and rode home....5 miles down the road, OCABS warning came on again. Took bike back they are now holding onto it for a week and will be calling Triumph on Monday. Further update to follow once I hear what they are planning next...
Bike has been returned and 60 miles so far with no repeat issue. Dealer confirmed advice from Triumph was that the wires run close to each other under the seat and some kind of repositioning resolves it. Weird but no problem for me so far. Not so much the other issue, whilst it was in I asked them to look at a loud clacking noise I could always hear at the top of the engine from cold.....turned out to need a replacement cab chain tensioner. All sorted under warranty but disappointed a bit as it only had 500 miles on it when the noise started. It has 1,300 now.
A few curiosities,
1) did the dealer ride it when the fault was active upon your arrival and/or try to troubleshoot the issue before just clearing the fault / codes ?
2) Any fault codes and explanations to what they mean provided ?
3) Or just clear it and then ride ?
As you may be aware, clearing the codes, clears the issue. Magic!
tks!
Other curiosities, prior to the issue arising;
4) has the tank ever been removed to install say the Blutooth connections for Triumph Connectivity ?
5) Or other reasons to access under the tank ?
6) Did dealer say how they “now positioned the said wires” ?
(presume these wires are for ABS / IMU system)
Tks again !
1) did the dealer ride it when the fault was active upon your arrival and/or try to troubleshoot the issue before just clearing the fault / codes ?
I rode it there and showed them, however they were never actually able to replicate the fault. The first time, they just 'cleared the codes' and then 5 miles after me riding it down the road, the fault re-appeared but this time, only the OCABS one NOT the OCTC one.
2) Any fault codes and explanations to what they mean provided ?
No, admittedly I didn't ask but it really did sound like they were puzzled by the whole thing, particularly as they couldn't replicate it even though I could. I don't have a heavy riding style or anything so it cant be because I was pushing it too hard or anything.
3) Or just clear it and then ride ?
Sounds like initially it was all they did
4) has the tank ever been removed to install say the Blutooth connections for Triumph Connectivity ?
No
5) Or other reasons to access under the tank ?
Not that I am aware of. This only started happening after first annual service (not 500 mile one) and unless there is anything they move as part of it? Maybe they check battery terminals or screws under there which might have moved/nudged a cable?
6) Did dealer say how they “now positioned the said wires” ?
(presume these wires are for ABS / IMU system)
No, but correct they were related to IMU system, they did mention that.
Fyi likely I self induced🤞; clutch in, front brake on, started bike, was in 1st gear, clutch slipped out of hand, slight lurch bike shut off, then displayed TC off (OCTC Disabled) and a OCABS Disabled fault logged (509 km), rode about 200m to park, turned bike off, approx 1 min, pwr on (wrench) present on display, clears itself, then select run, start, all normal. 🤪 continued riding couple more start/stops. Another day of riding, various start/stops, now at 673 km, no repeats. Always starting in neutral, 800k 1st service coming due soon and will have dealer look at that history and clear codes. My anomaly summary; start in neutral and pay attention. 😜
Hi everyone. I’m a new member with a 2019 1200 XE. I’ve been experiencing the OCTC and OCABS disabled fault also. Mine seems to be related to hard acceleration and higher speeds. I seem to be able to re-create it at will by accelerating up to about 100 mph or so. I get both errors which stay on until I turn the engine off. I was wondering if anyone has an update or any resolution from their dealer or Triumph? I’m going to call my dealer tomorrow and see what they say. I’m guessing they going to say don’t ride 100 mph which is fair enough but not an actual answer.
Years ago, a Microsoft executive bragged that if cars had improved as much as computers, cars would go a million miles on a drop of gas and produce 1000 hp or something like that. A Detroit exec responded that if cars worked like computers, every so often you’d just have to stop, turn them off, and turn them back on for no apparent reason.
Sounds like your making a pretty good argument for me sticking with my 71 Bonneville. At least when something goes wrong with that I usually can figure out what it is. Problem is things go wrong with a 71 Triumph on a relatively frequent basis... Still don’t think the ABS and traction control on my fancy new 2019 Scrambler 1200 should shut off just cause I’m going a little fast. When I’m doing something stupid is when I want that stuff to work. You know, like a good friend who tells you that shots of tequila may sound like a good idea right now but just aren’t.
Chuck24, mine have not returned 🤞 since my goof up. At the 800k 1st service the HKG dealer could see the codes in the fault history, again nothing active. They said they cleared them from history and if it returned would suggest checking the system wiring circuit. I told them about coments in this forum referencing wire routing under the tank. 🤔 I have since had the tank off for exhaust change and visually inspected all wire harness’ undertank then. Nothing obvious noted in any routing, right or wrong unknown. Seem to recall someone had the ABS module replaced for the issue. Maybe in the ADV Rider forum. I pay attention / being careful to the harness, pickups, wheel rotors during washes (bucket, soap/water, normal hose flow, no high pressure nozzle involved). Signal errors to the ABS module would fault it just as would a module fault itself. I’ll keep following this thread as well.
Mine has never returned since the dealer 'corrected it'. It was apparently just to do with a relocation of a cable - you should probably ask them about it since it is a known problem (so Triumph told me) and there is a documented resolution now. If you are close to a dealer then I'm sure they can sort it. If you are a long ride away (as it seems most USA riders are) then they can surely send you some instruction on the relocation.
Mine always came on during hard acceleration too, although I was never going above the max speed limit here of 70mph, obviously
Thanks everyone for the updates. I’m going to call the dealer this morning to see what they say. And Unistrummer, of course I was speaking about high speed testing on a closed course official testing facility conducted by an appropriately trained and certified “High Speed Test Rider” 🙄
Quick update, I took the bike to the dealer yesterday. They said there were no fault codes stored and the tech couldn’t replicate what I was describing. When I told the service manager that I could make it happen at will by accelerating hard at highway speeds his reply was that there was nowhere around the dealership where they could do that. They updated some software and basically sent me on my way. The service manager did ask me if when it happened I noticed the gear position indicator acting up. He said they have seen the traction control and abs act in the way I described when the gear position sensor was not working properly. I never saw anything strange with the gear position display when this happened and the tech’s report indicated that mine appeared to be functioning normally. So I guess I’ll contact Triumph directly and see how far I get with them. Bye the way I accelerated hard on a deserted stretch of highway on the way home and it happened again so their software updates did nothing for my situation. I’m so glad I paid extra for the XE model so I could have the added safety of lean sensitive traction control and ABS.
I can’t understand how there could be any connection between the gear position sensor and your ABS and TC. Riding mode display perhaps (just a guess) but not your gear indicator. Hopefully Triumph will get back to you with a remedy that doesn’t involve that Dealer.
TC is software driven. Anything that provides input to calculations that software performs could be a source of a problem. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Traction Control system monitors what gear you’re in, so there you go.
As for ABS, there might be something similar going on, but this is all speculation anyway...
Same issue on mine - Hard acceleration and ~100MPH trigger both ABS & TC lights until the bike is turned off. The closest dealer to me is ~4hrs rounds trip so if anyone figures this out (wire relocation?) please let us know!
I had my gear position sensor replaced under warranty at ~1,000 miles and issue is still there with the gear position sensor working fine ever since. ~5,000 miles on the bike now
