After almost 20k miles and a pair of scuffed up shocks, I gave in and I got the TEC pannier rails for my bike. Installed them yesterday. The black is nice and pretty much disappears into the bike!

I made my own surports the same shape as those out of 12mm alloy round bar and bent to shape and only cost me about $7 for a 3m length of round easy enough to paint them if I wanted to, but I made then so they are easy to remove when not being used so far haven't taken them off, they surport mu heavy made leather throw over bags without any problems at all.

hmm..

Scuffed from the leather on the back of the bag? I might need to do the same. I guess it wears on the paint over time?

By the way, do the bags move around much when you get up in speed.. like on the freeway?

Yes, the leather (plus some additional road grit)'s been rubbing against the shocks. A couple of weeks ago, I had one of the bags mounted without much weight in there and discovered that it was making contact with the tire because there wasn't enough weight to keep it down. I suspect it was also due to the leather mounting straps stretching over time. At that point, I decided it was time for the rails! The bags have been morphing into curved shape around the shocks. With the pannier rails installed, the Pack Animals are going to straighten out again and look boxy again. I still like the bags a lot, regardless! : D
