Recently installed a Meerkat X-pipe decat with stock pipes and loves the deeper sound vs stock, however felt I would like it a little bit louder, maybe 25% louder.
So I bought and fitted a Cone Engineering "shorty" slipon and WOW -- they are LOUD! Like 200% louder. And this is with a full face helmet and earplugs. Before I simply go back to stock, I wanted to see if anyone had thoughts on another aftermarket slip-on that might be a "little" bit louder than stock but not by much, but much quieter than the Shorties.
P.S. if anyone in the US is looking for a set of like-new Cone Shorties, let me know. I will sell for a 25% discount off new price with free shipping. I just fitted them yesterday.
Buddy has the x pipe ( we just installed in his and my bike) I have stock muffler ( for now) and he already has the Cone shorties. As he rode away the other day indeed it is Really loud. Thinking little too loud for my tastes. I'm now looking at the British Customs GP pipe. I really like the unusual style. I just want to hear a clip before going that way. Let's hear what you go to.
Love my cone shorty's ,kept the cat not wanting to upset the delicate balance of tune, keep the shorty's and remount your cat. you.ll love it Louder but not to loud with just a hint of crackle pop on aggressive deceleration .
Just got an x pipe fitted, and am completely in love with the tone I'm getting from my Vance & Hines slip-ons. The V&H's come with silencers that you can pull if you feel it's not loud enough. More noteworthy than the volume however, are the beautiful growl the bike makes accelerating—and the primordial burble you get when rolling off the power. It's fantastic without being too obnoxious. Here's a video someone made of this exact config:
Also, Captain Rambunctious has an in-depth video review of (freespirits)x pipe+V&H:
Remus makes a set of slip ons that look and sound great and have the ability to add or delete the silencer. Another option for you to consider. You might check these out. Agree, the V&H are a great way to go but they are expensive. I have the British Customs Predator Pro on my R but I chose to leave the stock cat in place. Love the sound they make. Figured it would be too loud if I put an x-pipe on it and pop too much on decel.
I considered the Cone shorties before I got the Meerkats, and my only concern was their megaphone shaped liner. No matter what you do, if you have a megaphone shape you're going to get sh*t-loads of volume straight out the back. That doesn't necessarily mean nice noise, it just means more noise.
If you're going short muffler I'd make sure it has similar size outlet to intake. I love the look of the Cone system, but I can imagine they will do very little muffling with that ratio.
It makes no difference to the power, and while you probably want the extra volume on a bike with a cat fitted, without the cat it will be pretty harsh.
Really? One is about 80% longer than the other
All of the 'muffling' on a straight-through muffler comes from the gas' compression waves expanding within the muffler housing. The holes allow that expansion, and the fibre-glass inside absorbs it like a sponge.
Even the profile of the muffler has an effect, with oval ones being more effective because they flex more. Even the size of the holes in the internal tube have a large impact on the effectiveness.
A short muffler needs to be carefully designed to avoid being ineffective, and that's where we sometimes see aesthetics being chosen over practicality. Remus pipes are similar, where they are mid-length but have gone for a slender look, which means less absorption, so I personally find them loud and tinny if you use them with a decat, although they sound fine with the cat fitted, which is how they were designed to work.
Making mufflers is like making a musical instrument. Something that looks awesome might sound terrible, and getting someone to design a solution for your needs means either finding a manufacturer who makes a muffler specifically for your setup, or finding someone who will make one specifically to suit your setup. My Meerkat was designed specifically to go with the cross-pipe, and during the discussions Peter warned me it would be louder if it was that short, but that he would design it as best he could to not be too loud. That's exactly how they came out, with a non-harsh note that is louder than stock but not at all tinny.
I've got the Meercat X-Pipe and Cone Shorties as well. I LOVE the sound and think it's perfect. It is indeed loud...but I think it's perfect. I just got a GoPro Hero 5 I've been meaning to test out...I'll try to take a video one day this week and post it.
Does he send overseas? Will be in Melbourne in October so maybe could get them sent to my hotel if I decide to go with a set of these. Could be quicker and cheaper.
Peter sends world wide and what everyone has said very quick delivery, when I got my Meerkat for my Thruxton Peter opened up my stock mufflers and changed the baffles similar to the old Conti baffles of the 70s and my Thruxton performs great with them and they aren't to loud and the best thing my bike is still stock looking so it keeps the cops at bay, but I am lucky as Peter at Meerkat is only 1 1/2 hours away from me.
Contact Peter at Meerkat he is very good and will give you some good advice in which way to go, he gave me my xpipe to do while he did his mastery on my mufflers all up $500 for the xpipe and open up mufflers and baffles a lot cheaper than getting new slipons, they are cracking down on non orginal mufflers and loud exhaust over here, but they don't even look at me, the open mufflers perform great and still under the legal noise DBs and all up put out a good note.
I am new here and way out of touch on how to navigate here, I need help. I have a 2020 Thruxton RS that I removed the cat and has Akrapovic slips. I read on various forums that I could idle it for 10 min and it would self tune. However it runs pretty crappy. Throttle response is not good, lots of back pop on deceleration, but mostly just a lag when you get on it.....and it just doesn't feel right. I am not used to computer scoots, mostly Harleys and older Kawasaki's Sr650, LTD1000, GPZ1100. So gas and spark, the good old way. Did I do something wrong? I disconnected and reconnected the battery and tried 10 again. Will see how it runs in the morning. Anybody?? I am in Cali, so I am illegal I believe, and shops want no part of me.
Backpop with the cat removed is normal. The cat usually absorbs most of the sound, but you need to modify the map to reduce it.
The 10min adaption cycle does almost nothing. People keep referring to it as a self-tune that "adapts" to your new setup, but it isn't. It's a very simplistic base tune for idle and cruise, and can set the baseline fuel-trim (if you still have the O2 sensors fitted) but won't have much if any impact on responsiveness.
Did you buy a full system, or how did you decat? An X-pipe gives better performance than a full-system, but either way I would get it remapped on a dyno as hesitancy is very difficult to eliminate without fuelling changes.
If you haven't already, remove the snorkel from the airbox intake as this has a measurable effect on the mid-range, but it's tricky to suggest anything else without seeing it in action.
Take it for a ride for about 20 minutes and shut it down the ECU will by that time adapt to the the decat and pipes, no need to let it idle for so long as it will adapt after the first ride.
It really did not adapt well. I did a redo of the idle method with a battery disconnect first. Seemed to help a lot more but still some throttle lag. It does sound ferocious though👹
I might need to do a remap with the help of some members.
Thank you. I did the battery disconnect and then the idle for 10 min. It helped a bit to unhook the battery. Seems better but there is still some lag.
Problem is this is Calif, no one wants to touch my altered bike. The stock header was used as were the rest of the pipe, along with the new x pipe. O2 sensors were kept in place. It has Akrapovic slip ons. They were on before the cat removal.
I might have to be schooled and do a DYI map. In my introduction someone suggested that there are many well knowledgeable peeps on here who could walk me through it. Might be my only option
But the headers are welded to the cat on the RS, so how did you decat it?
