16 XR - Fork Tube Replacement Alternatives

Hey there...so I decided that I needed new tires. Couldn't manage to get the front tire off..really odd. I suspected that there might be some cross threading going on, but decided to let the pros handle it. Took it to the shop where I bought the tires, and see if they could do anything w/it.

Yep..they couldn't get the damn thing out either. I'm looking at needing to hack the axle out of there, and replacing the left fork tube lower. (The black part where the front axle/spindle goes through.)

Well..wouldn't you know it. Triumph doesn't sell just the damn lower, I have to get a WHOLE NEW freeking fork tube, internals and all. To the tune of $741, because they can't sell me just the tube and associated lower w/o internals. An all or nothing kinda deal.

So..aside from hoping I can find something cheaper on ebay, is there a mfg who will replace the entire fork assembly w/improved internals?? Somebody please say yes...

Yeah, that isn’t the part I need. It is the black thing that isn’t labeled. The lower that part #22 (pinch bolts) is labeled to attach to in that diagram.

I found that Ohlins made complete forks for the previous gen Tiger. I also discovered that Racetech makes custom shocks too. Just not for the Tiger 800.

Lots of companies sell internals...nothing to be found on eBay at the moment.....

I would try one more time with something that applies more leverage. Apply some penetrating oil on the threads and let it soak overnight. A longer breaker bar might just do it. What do you have to lose at this point? Perhaps there is some corrosion or someone applied red locking compound. The red locking compound needs heat to release it, but I'd be very careful not to overheat the lower fitting.

I would take a bolt same diameter as the axle. Grind the threads off. Grind an inch or so small enough to fit in. Drill a hole in a 2X4 so the axle can come through and shape it support the fork on the other side then whack the heck out of the bolt with a sledge hammer. If success move to step 2 if you fail Grind through the spacer and axle to get the wheel off. Remove the fork then just press it out.
Step 2 helicoil and a new axle and your done. Good investment would be decent threadlock on the helicoil!

I had a local shop do this exact thing. Well..not exact, but close enough. $270 in labor and about $80 in parts with a new axle and spacer. Mechanic believes previous owner had a mishap which bent the axle. All else checks out though, so that was great news.

Picked her up yesterday, now to get the new front shoe mounted!
