Need recommendation on oil. Having oil consumption issues.

2015 Triumph Tiger 800 XRx 16K mi.
Rotella T6 5W-40

After about 4,200 miles of California riding since July 2018 (6K mi is the recommended interval per owner manual), I just noticed recently that i was short on oil. Had to refill about almost 2 liter of oil and my oil light didn't come on. California does get hot with ambient temp in 100s F and cold with ambient temp of low 20s F. I ride all year long. I was thinking of switching over to T4 15W-40 during the summer months, maybe even Castro 4T 10W-50 to help with oil consumption.

Never had an issue with my other bike, Suzuki GSX-R600 with 62K mi on Rotella T6, with oil consumption. I change oil every April and October, which usually is below 5K mi.

Need your opinions.

Oh no you didn't ??? That said, head to your local Walmart .. Their's a new T6 out, not even on the Rotella website. Thinking it's a market test before a full roll out. And, yes, it's still JASO MA/MA2 rated. I love the caption on the bottle right next to T6 synthetic, under ROTELLA .. I'm leaving this thread strictly at Rotella T6

Some of those Tigers have oil consumption issues that no oil is going to fix. It seems as though some of the piston ring end gaps were lined up. That could be your issue. I really don't think any oil change is going to fix your problem. I do know they can consume more when run at high RPM's for long periods, like highway riding.

That said, I've always run the recommended Castrol in 2 different Tigers and haven't had any oil consumption issues.

And, imo, I ran Rotella in my Cummins Ram and that's where it belongs.

Thanks for the heads up. I went and saw that my local WalMart has it.

Would a 15W-40 help slow the consumption down?

Also, I've read that the 15W should be good to go to 10F ambient temp and that the 15W-40 seems to sheer less than the 5W40 (Rotella T6).

Unfortunately that 15 number is only the cold flow weight, as soon as things warm up the 40 is what comes into play so you'd really need something with a higher number than the 40.

And thicker weight oils rarely ever help with an oil consumption issue, they usually help with low oil pressure do to excessive bearing clearances.

What "might" lower oil consumption is switching to a partial/semi syn oil. Some tigers use some oil, others don't. From a lot of threads I've read, oil usage appears to be a bit less with semi syn. I use a mixture of full syn/semi syn and have not used a drop of oil. Just maybe try a change with Castrol 10w40 partial syn Actevo. "If" your bike is out of warranty, maybe try the Rotella semi syn 15w40. Unlike their T4/T6 variants, the T5 IS NOT JASO MA/MA2 rated. Why ? ????

I have just noticed this same issue.. Although have had to top up a couple of times over the last 12 months. Have just been on an extended ride (5,500km - in Aus), and topped up almost 1 litre over the 2 weeks... Was getting a touch concerned, but by the sounds, seems to be nothing out of the ordinary....?
2015, with about 57,000kms on the clock...

Hmm then it sounds like a mix of T4 15w-40 and T6 15W-40 might be the thing.
