Winter Thoughts

Now that Spring is here I reflect back to the dark months of Old Man Winter. For me Winter is the time when my mind wanders and I think about motorcycles and the unique freedom they offer all of us. It's a time when my only contact with the motorcycle world is through magazines and the occasional longing look at the two dormant motorcycles in my garage.

It is the time when I wonder if another bike would not suit me better for the things I want to do with it. I'm a recovering sport biker and the new ones always catch my eye. Lately the siren song of the Kawi ZX-10 has been calling to me. So much so that I went and threw a leg over a sleek black and green one at my local dealer. As I said I get lost in those thoughts quite easily during the dark times. That is until I hear the sobering voice of my wife reminding me I'm 50 and not 25!!

Still my thoughts turn to other bikes and the adventures I could get into with each one. When I leave for work I feel the cold hard glare of my T'bird as if she knows what's on my mind as I walk by. I give her a reassuring pat on the fender but she knows the truth. Like my wife, the T'bird sees right through my ruse.

Like most of you I can find beauty in almost all motorcycles. I can appreciate them all and only own one. It's the "one" that I sometimes wonder about during the dark days.

So Spring is here and I survived another Winter of Discontent. All it took was to go out to the garage, fire up my bike and listen to the maelstrom of mechanical sounds that is the T'bird to shake off the winter and the dark thoughts it inspires.

The T'bird is quick to remind me why I own it and why I enjoy riding it so much. For me there's only one bike and she tells me so in her own subtle and not so subtle ways.

I took my first ride this year yesterday, and while it didn't extinguish all my lustful, wandering thoughts about the FJR1300, it was certainly a reminder why I love the TBird and why I haven't yet pulled the trigger on a new bike.

Well put, Billy.
The same holds true for many marriages.
Don't be so quick to grow weary of the one you have without taking a bit of time to remember why you snatched it up to begin with.

I'm not a daily commuter so i don't ride much over the winter time. For me, winter is when I dream about the trips i plan to take when spring hits. Winter is a time when I plan future rides for my group. I map out new routes, identify new scenic spots, special places to visit, etc. I have also been preparing for my upcoming Americade trip in June. Even though it's in June, I have been planning this since March. The trip itself allows me the opportunity to review and purchase the items I may need to make the experience more pleasurable. I haven't done many over night trips before so the thought of going away for a week, on my bike, with a bunch of my friends, is truly exciting for me. I remember the last time I did this trip. I was on my Ninja Zx12r. It had aftermarket/after thought saddlebags with an emphasis on "after thought." I also packed lightly and never really considered the elements. By the end of my trip I had gained a life's worth of experiences. The high mount exhaust burned a hole in one of my saddlebags, and I wasn't prepared for the thunderstorm that caught us on our way up. Some nights were chilly and I didn't have the proper clothing, and some days were hot enough to take dip and I didn't have swim trunks. I also didn't formulate an official schedule to follow during my visit so I probably missed out on a few things. I vowed to never make those mistakes again. I will say though, as I laugh at it now, it was still the best experience I ever had on two wheels. We were crazy and had a blast.

Fast forward to this year, I now have added a cruiser to my line-up and have built an extensive To Do list which includes things to install, gear to get, etc and I've been revising this list for months, as you can imagine. I also have an official agenda. Just about every hour will be accounted for. So, as you can see, this will be a new experience for me and I just can't wait. Today it is 35 degrees out and snowing. Not ideal riding conditions so this week I will continue to dream about my upcoming trips, and fire up the bikes once in awhile just to hear them roar.

might as well take this time to get the home repair things out of the way. Wife has a list too!

wow, i just noticed the letters W, T and F were blocked and replaced by asterisks!! anyone else notice that? I thought abbreviating was the more safer, civilized method.
