2500 km and bam - coolant leak!

Seems like I'm now officially in the club

Last night I went for a ride and when I got to my destination noticed the back of the engine spattered with green crap.

Thanks to this forum, I guessed exactly what had happened...

I got my flashlight out (I always carry a little Fenix - great lights) and after shining it around under the seat, noticed that the top hose clamp coming out of the thermostat had one little tooth poking out of it, while the lower had five teeth ... it was obviously not clamped down, and it was wet with coolant. Two minutes later, I had tightened it down and was on my way.

Today I rode again, and noticed only a few small spots (like three). Upon closer examination, it looks like the thermostat gasket is seeping a wee bit. I'm off to the dealer on Thursday to have them replace it.

Good thing about forums like this ... I was well aware of what was happening and no downtime!

I do feel like an idiot though ... I KNEW that clamp was a prime offender, and I had mentioned it to the dealership. They assured me they had checked it, and I just assumed they had. Maybe they did (they are a great dealership as far as I've experienced) and maybe it just loosened from vibration or something, but I should have had an eye on it.

Today I called around and none of the local Japanese bike dealers had ever heard of the manual's recommended coolant, but after checking with the dealership they told me I could top up with any motorcycle non-silica, aluminum approved coolant. Doesn't look like I lost any in the reservoir though ... so I'll just keep an eye on it for now.

What if there were no hypothetical questions?

Took a snapshot today with my phone.

Look under the left side of the bike, behind the engine, up under the tail of the tank.

Hope this helps.
