Setting preload

My dealer set the preload to 1. I want to change it to 2 because on occasion my wife rides with me. I need it soft for her to ride, but I also don't want the bike to bottom out. I'm assuming that going from 1 to 2 is increasing the preload. If that is correct, the book says to turn the adjuster clockwise. On the shocks, however, a little sticker shows that 1 is clockwise and 5 is counterclockwise. Which is correct?
I just turned the adjuster clockwise one notch. I'm assuming that if it was already at 1, I wouldn't be able to have turned it clockwise if 1 was the most clockwise setting.
Help!

Never mind. I finally figured that the sticker on the shock, along with the arrow sticker below it, shows what setting you are on and not what direction to turn. So turning clockwise does increase the preload just as the manual says.
So much for my engineering knowledge!

Ya I was looking at this yesterday too, took me a second to figure it out. I was surprised how stiff the softest setting is.. I'd like it a bit softer, and it would be nice to drop the bike a bit to get rid of the big rear fender gap. I was bummed to realize I was already on 1.
