how many miles on your avon storm ultra 2 rear?

Has anyone put more miles on a storm ultra 2 than they got from the metzeler? How many have you got on the storm and whats the tread look like? I'm about ready again after just 4.5k on this one. I'm trying to decide whether to go with the storm. But i'd like proof it will give me considerably more miles before i do.

Ok, here's some info i just got from avon, and it just goes to show you that you cannot believe anyone about anything regardless of who ! Someone i believe here said they called avon and was told they have tires in the works for our bikes since they have nothing now that is matched. They have our size for our rear in the storm ultra, and our front size in the cobra, but nothing that matches in the same model.

so i called them a few weeks back to get the details after a member here posted about this and heres what i was told, and i'm paraphrasing....

Quote:
we will be pairing the current cobra front with the storm ultra rear but beefing up the utra rear to be beefy enough for the Tbird
then i call again this morning to ask if i can use the current ultra rear and he tells me this after i tell him what someone else there told me when i called a few weeks back...

Quote:
who did you talk to? (my answer was didn't get his name) well, we would not match a storm with a cobra as thats a mismatch. They would be making something to match the ultra rear. (Me: so why can't i use the current rear since it's rated for a bike like mine as far as weight and speed. the other guy said you'd be beefing that up) No, we will just be making a front tire to match it, but till then i cannot recommend it. (Me: there are a number of people running them on the Tbird now) People do a lot of foolish things.
So there it is....totally different/opposite things from 2 different avon employees. Can you believe ANYTHING you're told today !!! Geez....

Avon 200/50/17R

Avon told me about 6 months ago and more recently that they were (STILL) working on a matched set for the Thunderbird. I had hoped it would be during my lifetime. The Cobra pattern is quite different than the Metzeler for the front. The think that sort of puzzles me is the Avon, if I remember correctly, is rated at 75W, same as for the rear Metzeler. If the weight rating is correct, then what would be the problem using it on the rear in place of the Metzeler. It either meets the weight specifications, or it doesn't. I am left with two scenarios, either keep the Metzelers until there is a matched Avon set (front AND rear, same or compatible design) or, keep the Metzeler front and put on the 200/50/17R Avon rear. For me, I will skip the Cobra and NOT put it on the front in any event. My sense is the answer you get depends on the day of the week you call them, who you talk to, and if they had their cup of joe and are awake to answer your question with some chance of getting a right answer. I did speak with Metzeler and they recommended higher pressures front and rear for the Thunderbird. On a second communication they indicated the same thing, amazing to get two responses that are the same. I personally use 38-40 psi range on the front and 40-42 psi on the rear, seems to work well for me. I have fewer than 2,000 miles for the rear left and will replace it with the Avon and keep the Metzeler on the front.

Thats pretty much how it is nowadays with and product and any company. Trying to get an answer is always like fishing w/o a hook. I have an email into the UK site which i think is where they are made. I told then how i'm getting conflicting answers from the USA office and asked if they can clear this up for me and give me the correct answer as to what exactly they are doing.I'll post back if i get an answer.

Well, the guy answered my email....sorta. He'll give me a better idea of whats going on after he's back from vacation. Heres what he said.

Quote:
I am on vacation in Florida at the moment and have no access to my work pc (not that I want access anyway!) We recently tested a Tbird in the UK and expected to have to beef up the rear but I don't think this was the case. I think the Cobra front and Storm rear worked perfectly but will let you know for sure in 2 weeks when I'm back.

surprise, surprise!

Kind of suprised about the Cobra front tire. I DID think the 75W rating of the Avon 200/50/17R was fine for the Metleler rear replacement. Keep us posted, there just might be a good alternative for the relatively low mileage rear tire. Hope that fellow follows up, looks like he might. Getting reliable information is about as rare as hen's teeth.

I saved his email so if he doesn't follow up i will forward it to him to jar his memory and say "do you recall this conversation, and if so did you find out anything since you got back?"
I need a new rear tire YESTERDAY and i really don't look forward to yet another 4000 miles for $230. (about $200 shipped+$30 mounting if i removed wheel myself) I can put 4 friggin tires on my car for $600 and the last set is still going strong at 30,000 miles ! I get the whole "car tires don't need to be as soft" thing, but then why not $100 fr a bike tire since they wear so damn fast ! I mean, in the time i wear out a $600 set of car tires i've spent close to $2500 on tires for the Tbird ! And thats doing the removal and install myself unlike my car. That would be another $500 at least for all those tire bringing it to a grand total of $3000. You're looking at more than the cost of the bike itself after it's lifetime, and thats only if it lasts only 150K which is low for a water cooled bike. AND, thats assuming my car tires were done at 30k. They will easily go another 10-20k, as they look about 1/2 done. So considering all that this thing is jaw dropping expensive to buy tires for. I thought my speedmaster was bad at 9k per rear. thats almost double what i'm getting now.

Well, everyone seems to say it gets longer mileage and handles as well as the metzeler rear, so I ordered one and should have it tomorrow. I will post the ride results soon and hopefully the mileage will live up to the rep. My current metz only has about 5k on it and it's nearly toast. On a odd note, on the last metz front i have gotten far more mileage for some reason. I was getting around 7k and this last one has been on longer than my 5k rear, tho can't recall just how much longer, but it looks almost new ! The only things that have changed since it went on are BB kit and 10W fork oil change from 15W. I can't imagine that causing it tho. Plus i HOPE not because i don't like the 10 W and plan to use 15W next change.

Thanks. There are 4 or 5 guys with Tbirds at that "other place" that are running these, some with the stock metz front and some with the Avon cobra front. They all say it handles as good or better and at least one is up past 8000 miles on his and says it looks like it's got a good amount left. heck, if i just got 8k that would be enough reason right there. Might get a cobra front when the time comes, tho it supposedly has some snakeskin pattern on the sidewall so i'd have to see that before i buy because i don't want that kind of cheeziness on my bike. No skulls and flames either...this ain't no harley !!!
