Welp, I took the plunge and landed a nice 2010 Thunderbird 1700. It is the special edition with factory big bore and metallic red haze paint - not sure if that is actually a "SE" designation, as it looks like there was another SE released with bags and whatnot.

I've put about 75 miles on her so far and really enjoyed every mile. I found that I could rest my groin (!) by using the back pegs which gives me a more sport bike like feel that I'm used to. I'm sure it looks really stupid, so I was doing it when no one was looking. I also found that I could hook my heels over the pegs as suggested here, and the buckles on my boots are just in the right spot to sort of anchor my feet so I can really relax them up there. I bought a set of Triumph floorboards, but it looks like you need the mounting kit from the heel-toe conversion to install them, so I'll have to ship them back to MADDS (great service btw).

It was funny after getting it home, I looked down at the odometer.. and this is what I saw! I had to snap a pic.

Thanks for everyone's help!

Good choice...I also have the red haze. I think it's actually a Limited Edition because they only made a few of them. Anyway, ride it like you stole it and don't look back.

Sounds like some of you are getting decent deals - if you don't think so, go to the Harley dealer and see what you will pay for a comparable bike. But that wouldn't be fair to compare the Tbird to an inferior air cooled machine. I was all lined up to buy a factory demo bike that tours around and the magazine writers get to drive - it was black, with 1,100 miles on it and would have been out the door to me for $11,000. But a local dealer in LA snatched it up and the deal fell thru - so to try and make it right the dealer had their own floor demo with 180 miles on it, blue and white bike. They sold it to me for $10K, I wrote them a check out the door for something like $12,193, thanks to our local sales tax of 9.75% Then we just try to hide the other stuff from the wife - you know...stuff...like, helmet, jackets, gloves, boots, windscreen, bags, TORS, and now tires!
