has anyone removed the rear caliper from it's bracket?

I just had the wheel off last week and it's such a pain sometimes (that time worse than ever by far!) that i really don't want to do it again till i need a tire. But my pads are almost totally gone. Someone at the other forum said their mechanic replaced the pads by taking the caliper off the bracket so he could get to everything w/o removing the wheel. There is nothing in the manual showing how it comes off, probably because of the fact triumph specs the entire caliper and bracket as one replaceable part, that is you cannot replace anything, just the entire thing ! so they don't show how, and it's hard to see. there are rubber caps over what i think are the bolts to remove it, but they don't come off easy and seem like they'd be impossible to put back on if removed. So i was hoping someone could hip me to this procedure or removing the caliper from the bracket. i gotta tell ya, this bike is the hardest bike i've ever had to work on !

Daz, I changed my pads without removing the wheel or caliper. the pads are held in place with a pin and lock as the SM states. If you can raise the bike and remove the lock( remember how it goes to put it back... PITA) and drift out the pin from left to right and remove the pads. At this point blow/ clean out all debris from the caliper. slightly open the bleeder and push the pistons back with your fingers and close the bleeder,replace the pads, pin, and lock. Pump the pedal slowly and check the resevoir.Also while your in there lubricate sparingly the contact pointsof the pads without getting any on the pad surface so they work freely.

I know how to replace the pads, as i already did that twice. But i want to remove the caliper from the bracket so i can clean it well, not just blow it out. I read that pushing the pistons back in will ruin the seals after a few times, so i want to get in there and clean them to get any dust and other crap thats stuck on off them. The caliper as i said is sold as a unit with no replaceable parts sold, (aside from a few things like the pin, spring etc) so if the seals go I'm out close to $600 with tax, and i already pushed them back in twice w/o a good cleaning. So i need to know how to remove the caliper from the big black aluminum mounting bracket that the axl goes thru.

I must have missread your post.As for what your looking for,I dont know how it comes off nothing looks conventional.

Someone said thier mechanic did it that way, but like i said the manual shows nothing. In fact, speaking of the manual i always thought my speedmaster's manual was bad, but compared to the Tbird's it's a wealth of knowledge. It's nuts how useless the Tbird service manual is. aside from torque specs i could almost get by with my general mechanical motorcycle knowledge. It's no wonder so many dealer service depts are so incompetent !

Flip the exhaust out of the way and drive the pins out. That's how I changed my pads without removing the tire.

I know, but again thats not what i'm asking. I want to know how to remove the caliper because i want to do more than just change pads. there are 2 mountings but they have a spring of sorts and are covered with rubber boots that if i try and pull off seem like they won't, at least w/o tearing them. So i can't see how to remove them w/o potentially ruining the rubber. They may even be permanent rivets of some sort because the caliper and bracket are said to be sold as one unit. But then someone said thier dealer removed the caliper w/o taking the wheel off so it must be possible.

Well, i just changed the pads w/o cleaning the pistons and all that. I did that last week when i had the wheel off (tho not real thuroughly) so i guess it'll be ok, tho as i said if you ruin the seals you have to buy a whole new caliper/bracket assembly at almost $600 after tax !

Anyways, last time i changed the pads it was with the wheel off. This time with it on, and while it took about 20 minutes thats about 1/3 or less the time i had estimated. One of the very few times anything i've done to this bike turned out to be much quicker than i thought.

I agree about the manual my other service manuals are much more user friendly.
