Great video, RV. I took my bike out for a run today, and it was a little cold but the sun was shining and it was great. Actually, I took both bikes out--I rode the Bonnie first, and then took the TBird out for a spin. Great fun despite the cold.

Cub's gear indicator

The pointer on the "Tigercub" disk rotates (hopefully) to the right gear through the use of a small rack and pinion mechanisim just below the nacelle. A cable moves the rack and pinion back and forth as it is connected to the shifter plate which moves up and down in the gearbox when different gears are selected.

Since the Tigercub and Terrier were entry lvl machines it was thought a gear indicator was a good idea for novice riders. I guess it may have helped sell a few on the dealers floor but in use it soon failed or gave poor feedback and was usually tossed out and never replaced.

hahha...."feedback" now there's a term I don't think Edward Turner would have considered!

top of the box

Yes , I think the nacelle mounted indicator on the Cubs were dropped in the early 60's and at some point changed to a dipstick like indicator that popped out of a hole atop the gearbox. Quite a feat to look down under your right knee to see what gear you are in.....I suppose it would only be usefull at a stoplight to confirm neutral, but even then:D

Today, I hope to sort the rest of the right side engine cover. and maybe look at the carb...

Today I finished making brass cover plates for the rear motor plates.

Had some brass sheet and just wanted to see if they looked good or not- if not i can paint them black.

The gearbox side plate had a non-removeable captured bolt- had to drill thru the shank to release the nut- which popped right off.

Then had to remove the master cylinder plate to get the bolt out- not much fun!

The backing plate was missing a threaded bung- hence the spinning bolt captured between both the frame gusset and the backing plate.

The yellow spot is where the bung should be, and the captured bolt was never tight.

Google search shows this plate as a "repair" type.
How it ended up on my bike is a mystery.

Now if i need to remove the motor plate to free the gearbox inner cover- all is good.

Keep on truckin'

New bars and a winter spin

Put some new Norman Hyde M style bars on my '70 Daytona. Some before and after pics here. Wow, what a different look and feel. Didn't get new grips so just took a few spins around the block in the 40F weather we're having in Massachusetts. Now I've got to find a way to mount the horn without drilling the bars.... Also the stock mirror arm doesn't help much I need to find something with a higher rise I think.

what I finished today

Just buttoned everything up, all set for the next season.
I was leaking trans fluid - covering my rim and chain guard on every ride so I changed the seals on the mainshaft. I found the locking tab washer was in backwards! with the splines mangled and a ruined o-ring,that had to be my problem. Also new gaskets from the base up.
And a little scraping and cleaning hard to reach parts.
now just waiting for the weather.

Had my 2002 MGF sports car and 1977 T140V tucked up for the winter in my father in law's garage for a few months now, so went down there this morning to fire them up.

MGF's battery was as flat as a pancake.

Bonnie burst into life on second kick. That's my girl!

Only recently started looking at this thread - its a really good idea! To join in, I can report that I sent my spare hubs (which I spent ages polishing) to Hagon, for them to build with alloy rims.

I've used Hagon before and found them to be true experts, unlike a certain centrally located wheel company: this bike has the second example I've encountered of poorly built wheels by the latter.
