Finally got the entire exhaust system, new muffler mount brackets and all, mounted on the `73 today.Despite my best efforts I have not been able to acheive the picture perfect install I was looking for.Although everything is well fitted and solidly mounted the finished product doesn`t exactly look like what I`m seeing in pictures of other 70`s Triumphs with that style of exhaust system.Perhaps someday I will figure out where I made the wrong turn but for now things will have to remain as they are.

Today I put all the bits of the tach drive back together and put it back on the bike. Then I put the carb back together with a new floatbowl gasket and new o-rings on the adjusters, now if only I could remember where I put that ring that goes around the carb mouth to seal against the intake rubber.

I took my newly rebuilt Bonneville for its first ride yesterday. The rear brake failed at the end of the driveway but I didn’t let that stop me from getting in a short ride. The bike ran great but the tranny seemed to shift a bit strange. Maybe I should have used heavier oil in the gearbox instead of the 20/50 I used?
20/50 ?? , what were you thinking?

I hope you`re going to change that to 80/90 gear oil as soon as possible!!

There`s only one thing better than a pretty woman and that`s a smart woman, one smart enough to know a good man when she sees one.

You`d be surprised to know how few there are.Just a couple of days ago I heard a familiar story again, the one where some stranger tells me he`s looking for a bike now that he`s separated or divorced because the Mrs. made him get rid of it when they got married. No wonder the thing didn`t last!

If the motorcycle is the dealbreaker, then better to keep the bike and ditch the b*tch,it`ll be better for everyone in the end.

Today I got the `73 running for the first time in almost 20 years! It didn`t run very well or very long but it`s a milestone of sorts.Next I have to get it running on two cylinders a bit more consistantly.

Today I put a multimeter on all the ignition parts to see if I could find out why I`m getting such a weak spark on the left cylinder. To make a long story short I couldn`t find any fault and started the bike up again only to find more black smoke coming from the left side. Now I`m going check the timing and points gap on the left to see if the fault lies there.

Go ahead and check the tappet clearance while you're checking things...

As you may recall - I went through a zillion gyrations trying to figure out why my bike would begin to sputter above 4000 RPM in 3rd and 4th gears - I looked at coils, plugs, plug wires, battery, flow from tank and more - only to discover that the clearance on the right exhaust valve had pretty much disappeared.

Once that was put right, all my troubles were solved.

Best of luck to you.
I`ve got 125 lbs. of compression on the right and 135 on the left and the tappet clearances were OK when I last checked but I`ll check again.

Got that peskey brake light wire soldered back on the switch inside the handlebar switch assembly of the `73 and polished the housing while I was at it.Now that all the lights are working I can get the bike certified and plated for the road.

I think a lot of time and trouble could be saved by carb replacements rather than messing about looking for other percieved problems, chief among them ignition troubles.Because a carb wears out over time the effect it has on performance is not appreciated until there are major problems which are then wrongly attributed to other factors.

The price of a brand new Amal carb is so cheap that it should not even be an issue to replace it.

Today I noticed some smoke escaping from the fuse holder while I tried to diagnose a problem with my headlight toggle switch on my `73,it got so hot that the soldered connector actually melted the solder and fell off. After a little work with the soldering iron and the installation of a new fuse all was right again and everything on the bike started working better from the lights to the horn and of course the toggle switch on top of the headlight pot.

After this minor victory I consulted my 1969 printing of J. B. Nicholson`s Modern Motorcycle Mechanics to see how much I could remember on the topic of Triumph engine timing and points adjustment. It turned out to be not very much.In any case I proceeded to adjust the points gaps on both sets and left it at that.Tomorrow I will start the bike to see if the quantity of escaped smoke was too great to allow the bike to run well or if I need to replenish the Lucas system.

I second that... or maybe third is more appropriate.

MoBe, based on this, you may want to check your petcocks as the source for your hot fuse problem.

regards,
Rob
At the moment neither the tank nor the petcocks are actually on the bike, but the carb is so I will investigate as soon as possible accordingly, and thanks for the advice Snakeoil.

Resealed the primary cover on the `73 with Loctite 565 as a sort of experiment in gasketless sealing.I want to do without a paper gasket in order to save the bother of waiting to have one mailed every time I want to have a look at the clutch.Of course I could cut one from a cereal box easily enough but a non hardening sealing paste is just so convenient that I can`t resist.

The whole point of the sealer only method is convenience, not having to procure the necessary gasket material from which to make them and of course the effort to make them itself.I`ve made plenty of my own gaskets over the years but for some reason I`ve grown tired of the process and now I`m trying a different approach.

I`ve known of Hylomar since the early 80`s but have not found a convenient local source so I`m going with the familiar Loctite product.
