Over the weekend, and tonight, fiddled around with the '59 waiting until next Saturday when I hope to finally have my tank back from the painter.

In response to a discussion on this forum, took the Zener heat sink (finned egg) off and painted it in matt black flame proof paint. The aim (apart from improving heat dissipation) is to make it blend into the black forks, since it belongs to a later model.

Put a current registration label on.

Removed the cover from the seat and reassembled with a top layer of softer foam. Not as flat as before, but a sight more comfortable.

Took the Tiger out for a short spin of about 30 miles tonight up and down the wee country roads to check all was well before heading to Scotland this weekend....running like a clock but noticed the indicators were flashing strangely...by the time I got home they were only flashing very briefly. The culprit proved to be the flasher unit...( a cheap Chinese pattern item from the local auto store). I had the original Lucas one which was "lazy" and tried it out and it was working same as before.
Ironically the flasher unit is the only piece of electrical equipment on this 'bike that's not original (apart from bulbs of course). I'll get a new unit tomorrow. Can't wait for the weekend trip!

Yesterday was another rainy Saturday so I figured it was time for me to re torque the head down since I hadn’t taking the time to do it sooner since the rebuild. The head bolts where really loose. Three of the bolts where barely finger tight.

I have been having trouble keeping the carbs adjusted for the past few weeks. I’ll bet now that the head is securely bolted down and valves properly adjusted that problem will go away, at least until the head loosens up again.

Yesterday, I replaced the studs and nuts securing my oil sump plate. I had the plate on and off a few times while I was flushing the system (it has a the paper filter conversion) and it was fine. Murphy's Law prevailed when I filled her up with amber nectar and the replaced the plate for the final time, it leaked slightly. At least one of the studs was showing signs of stripped threads. All's well now.

Today, I think I got to the bottom of a sticking carburettor float problem, thanks to help and suggestions from fellow forum members. The plastic moulding of the float around the pivot area was rough.

If the rain stays off tomorrow, I'll take her for a rest run.

Spent Sunday morning installing a brand new Amal Concentric. All went well. Bike virtually started itself! 1st kick, adjust idle mixture/ idle stop screws, runs perfectly now. Very productive and satisfiing day. Happy, happy!

I think a lot of time and trouble could be saved by carb replacements rather than messing about looking for other percieved problems, chief among them ignition troubles.Because a carb wears out over time the effect it has on performance is not appreciated until there are major problems which are then wrongly attributed to other factors.

The price of a brand new Amal carb is so cheap that it should not even be an issue to replace it.

Exactly. Rebuilt the old one the way it's supposed to and still had issues (bad idle, leaking, only ran with the choke on, etc. etc.). With a new carb, you can check off a lot of question marks. A very worthwhile investment ibn this case

Delivery truck came today

I installed new isolastic mounts and rubber washers for the handlebars on my 72 TR6. I hope this will keep my right hand from going numb. I mounted new MAC shorty megaphones on my 73 TR7 and changed the needle jet to a 107. At exactly 1/2 throttle, I was getting a bit of pre-ignition knock (ping, pink,oh sh-t) since I installed the new Amal 932. On the mufflers (silencers) the PO installed, I had to stack adapters and still had a loose fit with the downpipes. I got some 3M fire barrier sealant from Home Depot to seal my drive-side push-in pipe.. It is intended to stop fire from penetrating through walls for 3 hours and bonds to metal. I plan on applying a small bead on one pipe only, near the outer surface. I don't want to make it difficult to remove.
Just as I was about to do a road-test, a cold rain started. I took the hint and rolled back into the shop. There is 23 feet of snow on Trail Ridge road 40 miles from my house. Horsetooth Rock across the road was white with snow this morning.
The new mufflers ROAR as intended. Bob

I finally got to ride my 71 Bonnie after installing new JRC carbs, and using Buckshot's shift plunger fixture...it was awesome...first time I ever used all 4 gears without propping the shifter with my foot. Only rode about 5 miles, but no major leaks. I got a nice smooth idle at about 800 rpm. My only issue is starting...I have to use a shot of starter fluid. could my ignition be advanced a bit too much ? I have a Sparx ignition, thinking of retarding it a bit to see if that helps starting. Any other thoughts ? ( new pistons, rings, valves, etc just in).

David, I would not be looking at timing at this stage. If it is advanced it would be inclined to kick you back on a lazy kick over.

How are the JRC carbies choked? I'm guessing this engine is not getting fuel enough for easy starting. RR

"So what are the differences in oil temp? RR "

I didn't take any temp readings before I installed(yeah I know I should have), but normally when I would go out for an hour ride, the oil tank would be really hot to the touch. Yesterday after install, I went for an hour ride and the tank was just warm. I will take some real temp readings today and post them.
