What I did with my classic Triumph today?

As a Hinkley triple owner (don't hate me guys!) I sometimes also read the threads on that section of the Triumph Rat forum and they have a long running thread "what I did to my classic triple today" or something very similar. Posters put up a few lines about what they did with their 'bikes that day..... polished it, rode it, rebuilt it, crashed it, etc etc you get the idea, anything goes really.

Anyway, thought it might be worth starting a similar thread here as I'm selling the "modern" 'bike and concentrating on my classics.
I'll start it off....

Today I got back my speedo which I'd sent to the UK for repair. It was working but had a lot of needle "flutter". Looks like new (still) and can't wait to try it out....

OK who's next?

See '72 Bonnie thread for my rebuild of seat......
Thanks Webby
At present, like you i'm a bit strapped for cash,,,,, although this looked like a really good deal, thanks for the response.
I will probably be looking in a few months although i should really use one of my old racing lumps. (A65) iv'e got a couple and the NorBsa thing is tempting as i've never seen it done with an A65 only A10's.
You seem to be doing a very nice job of your Triton, i like the exacting approach you take with layout etc. I also wish i had the resource of a mechancal Engineering firm to scrounge from!!!!!
You mentioned the horrific price of the Grimeca front brake, have you thought of using one out of a Suzuki 'water bottle' they were 4 LS and will lace into a WM2 or 3 rim. A few guys i raced with used them.
Are you going to fit an 'outrigger' bearing behind the clutch? this is a good idea as it makes for better changes and slows wear on the g'box.

Cheers
Nick
Hi Nick,
I think most of us on the forum are strapped for cash, I wonder why :D
That engine was put on e bay in the end and sold for less than 300 USD, someone got a good deal!
The Grimeca drum is pretty good value, £411 at Disco volonte, it's the TZ drum that I would like, but I've yet to see one go for under 1200 USD. I toyed with the idea of the Suzuki drum, but with the price they're selling for on flea bay plus the shipping they are not much cheaper, I don't see the point in buying secondhand when new only costs 50 or 100 more.
I think I will be fitting an outrigger bearing, in fact I was looking at the Britec website today, they have some really tasty stuff including an outrigger bearing and a beefed up primary window. I'll have to start looking to see if I can find the same in the UK.

Set the valve clearances and changed the engine oil....hoped I might get out for the first time this year but.....it's snowing again!!:(
Well, yesterday, I went for my first jaunt in way too long. Nice day with a few clouds and cool enough for gloves. New throttle cables installed earlier in the week, and first time out perched on the rebuilt seat with the crisp gold Triumph logo. Lots of looks going by a couple bars with a gaggle of HD types out front, as well as those in 4-wheeled transport. Today, it rains.
On Sunday the seatpan on my `73 got a fresh coat of paint, that was after I drilled out the two broken hinge bolts.
Today I somehow managed to fix the four tiny rivets that hold the inner ring of the speedo drive and the the whole thing got a fresh coat of paint.Saved myself a few bucks there.
Today I gazed longingly at my T100 during a break in the showers, but was warned not to jinx my sale - what could be worse than having a crash on that 'one final ride' after the bike has been sold - so I set my sights on the new project. Got out the cylinder head, jugs and rocker boxes that were returned to me from the mechanic who had my bike for 18 months and fit them together - to make sure everything was from the same era... and while I'm no expert, the threaded holes are BSF, so I'm pretty sure this stuff is period correct for 1967. I did not get my push rod tubes back and as expensive as they are, getting the right ones is important.

Stripped the parts from the rocker boxes, and shined them up with a wire wheel - sure, it's only temporary, but they look grand and it was nice to get my hands in some parts again.
Today I returned the, now nicely polished by hand ,primary cover to my `73 TR7.It just makes the bike look so good I can hardly take my eyes off it!The installation was without gasket, sealant only,so I`ll be interested to see how it works out.

This is not an official help text. This is just what I have happened to find out. I know of two ways.

1. Upload from your computer. Result: attached clickable thumbnail.
Press Go Advanced, then Manage Attachments. You'll get a pop up window.
On the pop-up window select the Browse button next to 'Upload file from your computer'.
find a jpg picture that is not too big. Click Upload.
Click "Close this window".
2. Upload from another web site. Result: Larger image that may be resized.

Upload your pic to photobucket or similar web site. Display the picture in your browser.
Photobucket gives you a text box labelled "IMG code". Click on that, its contents change to "Copied".
Then just go back to where you are typing your message in this forum, hold the Ctrl button and press V.

Hope this helps.

Today the timing cover on the `73 got the hand polish treatment and just to make it all the more enjoyable I did it on the motor,in the bike,on the ground,I just love a challenge! After that bit of play I decided to fix the threads on one of the carb manifold studs, this time off the motor and on the bench. However not to waste an opportunity to do some more handwork I gave the manifold a shine as well just for good measure.
Dang Mobe. You're totally putting me to shame. The weather is great here except the wind at about 15 to 20 mph, and I know I should be loving on the old girl. You've motivated me to back her out on the patio and wash her. Then I will drive around the neighborhood. Maybe lable my post what I am going to do to my bike.

Ron
Done! A quick wash to knock the dust off and a brisk ride around the neighbohood. Blasted her up to about 5,000 rpm on a couple of runs, but can't be too disrespectful to neighbors so I limited the higher rpm blasts. She is running excellent, especially with the Phillips 100 octane high peformane fuel. She pulls strong. Really good mid range torque.
How about sending some of that 100 octane juice northward TX?The best we can get around here is 93 octane,it`s like drinking "Lite Beer",a waste of time!
Well, it's not what I did but plan to do...by my reckoning it is my Bonnie's 40th birthday or thereabouts...the weather has changed to 65+, I finally have all the bits an nits cleaned up, and I am going for my first ride after work today on her just for fun.. I have tooled around just a few miles as part of tuning, etc., but today after 20 months of work and money, this should be the first real ride..the reason I bought her ....we will see.....tally ho!

You're 'gonna enjoy this ride bro! RR
Well...drat....darn...and a few other unprintables....she started pretty easy, clutch worked fine, but NO GEARS. Shifting up from first...nothing....mine has the leaf spring plunger, and I wrestled with it for about a week.. new springs and plungers......thought it was OK....oh well - back to the shop.

I rode about 2 miles in 1st, came back.

What, no video?
went for a run in the country with my neighbour, he has an A10, after about 10 miles i heard a nasty scraping noise coming from the chaincase. As luck would have it he has workshop a 1/4 mile up the road so we removed the chaincase to find the head of one of the clutch bolts had sheared off, even luckier neighbour has welding gear so a bit of welding and grinding and reassembling i was back on the road in no time, theres lucky..
