Hello all,
I have been lurking here awhile, interested in adding a Triumph to my stable. The Sprint has caught my eye. What are the differences through the years on this bike? I found a '95 Sprint that is available locally for sale. It has 17,000 miles and seems to be in above average condition. I am considering adding it as a second bike to share between me and the misses, for me as a second commuter, or for her touring. I have a few questions. Are hard bags available for this model? Any typical issues to look for on test ride? And lastly, what is it worth?

Thanks,

I look forward to learning the new "to me" brand.

Thanks for the replies seumas and Lone-Rider. I have another couple questions to add.
Is there a Givi kit still available for this vintage Sprint? I really need a top box, but panniers would be great too.
And what are the differences between the '95 era Sprint, Trophy, and later RS and RT models?

Thanks for the patience

I may be wrong but, I don't think the bags are still available from Givi.

The early Sprint had a carbureted 885 cc triple and a large backbone frame. They have a three inch backbone that goes over the top of the engine. It is very rigid, but also makes the bike somewhat top-heavy since you have a 6.6 gallon gas tank on top of that frame.
The second-generation RS and ST had a fuel injected 955 cc triple. This engine makes more power and gets better gas mileage. They also had a beam frame that wraps around the sides of the engine which lowered the center of gravity.
I like my 95. It's a unique bike with a lot of character. In the three years I've had it I've seen one other bike like it. It's kinda cool because I get a lot of people coming up and asking questions about the bike. On the other hand finding parts can be a challenge. Triumph does still stock parts but they usually have to be ordered.

SEUMAS,
Mine's a' 98. You're right about the backbone bikes being a little top heavy, but you know, I've gotten totally used to it and now it feels like a big bicycle to me. I love my Sprint. I just wish I had the factory side bags. Then my touring package would be complete.

Archi, you're right that you get used to how the bike carries it's weight. I don't notice it at all any more.
To be honest I hardly ever use the hard bags. I usually use either a tank bag or a tail pack, but they are nice to have when the weather turns bad.

I added the Givi wing rack setup for three bags years ago. Most of the time I use only a top case, but from time to time take long trips that need more space. Full wing rack setup with 36 l panniers and 50 l top case looks like this

If you don't need that much space, a Givi top case can be added with the Triumph luggage rack and Givi adapter plate. Looks cleaner than the full wing rack as well. Should still be aviailable if you dig a little, and it looks like this.

cheers --

Hi,

If you can take a look at an old Accessory Part List for our Sprints, you will find that Triumph offered a number of luggage systems. They were brought in from Ventura and Givi, often with a Triumph badge.

The Givi systems were the Wingrack & Monokey items, and you could have 2/3 standard Monokey black case set or a 'luxury' set of the colour coded cases. You may be lucky if you contact the Givi distributor?

I went for the Ventura soft luggage system, which with a Bagster tank cover & bag gives me many options, and avoids having unnecessary fittings on the bike all the time.

If you decide to try for the Givi system and have trouble, I may be able to find the (Givi) reference numbers for you.

Ciao,
Geoff

Mine is a 96 and came with the Givi panners. I love the bike. It fits me, it has lots of power and there are not allot of other ones in my regeon so it is quite unique.
You do however need to be somewhat tall to ride it comfortably.
A great bike it is..

Buy it.

Hey Catneck.

I picked up my '94 Sprint last Sept. with 45,000 KM on it (about 28,000 mi.) for $3,500 here in the Great White North. It's a great bike ( in fact my favorite of the bikes I have owned) with a sound that makes you want to twist the throttle on a regular basis. I also have the Givi-sourced bags and have found them quite useful (and capable of swallowing a full face hlemet if you close them carefully). The ride and handling are excellent except for some brake dive on initial application, but there are some threads in the forum that will tell you how to handle that little problem. Yes, parts can be a bit tricky to find but then again, if you look after it well, you shouldn't have to worry about much other than tires, oil, filters and brake pads. As for me, I love this bike and if I ever buy something else, I will definitely hang onto this one. Oh and get a Corbin saddle for touring. Mine has the leather version and even my beat up old body easily handles long trips.

Buy it and enjoy yourself...a lot. :D

more luggage

I took a quick look on the internet and found a site for the Motorcycle Superstore in the U.S. Here is the link

http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/

Not only do they seem to have a reasonable selection of luggage but they seem to have customer ratings on each model, which can help you decide which might be best for you. If you'll be travelling two-up, you may also want to invest in a backrest. My better half won't go anywhere with me without one. She just feels safer and that reduces the stress for her and allows us to have longer rides. :)
