I've been thinking about tracking my bike but am worried about all the modifications that have to be done. There are some things I just don't understand, I cannot grasp the reason for having to tape my headlight as it's made of the same material as the rest of the bike, I've seen too many sport bikes wrecked and the rest of the bodywork is torn to heck and the only thing to come out OK is the headlight assembly, I do understand the safety wiring and taping or removal of mirrors(real glass) just can't fathom taping the plastic bits.

Some bikes like my suzuki had glass headlights. It's probably easier for the inspectors just to have them all taped. I'm unclear what you say you are worried about though. I'm surprised that they require safety wiring. Most track days didn't require that I thought. It's kind of a pain to do.

It depends on how far you want to go to prep your bike.

I know people that strip all the road gear and run fibreglass fairings in case they do drop it.

More commonly people ride the bike to the track, do the track day, then ride home. Now there is a real incentive to keep the rubber side down!

But remember its a track day - youre not racing.

Typically you will cook a set of tyres and if youre going to ride hard and brake hard a set of front discs could also be needed afterwards, although this is less common.

Having said that, track days are a hoot so go for it and letus know how you went.

Brett.

Each track or track school has their own rules about bike prep. The one I attended required tires at 90% of life left or better, brake pads at 75% or better, no oil or coolant leaks, taped mirrors and tail lights.
It was fun. Remember you only have to ride as hard as you want.

I wouldn't do a track day that required drilling bolts for safety wire. There are other tracks out there that aren't run by Nazis.

I've not seen a track day that requires wiring bits. Taping yes. I normally remove the mirrors and tape lights and indicators. Word of warning. Laughed my head off when my mate taped his headlight on his new GSX-R600 and melted the lens as is was a bike where you cannot turn off the headlights (new EEC regulations).

The problem with not being able to turn off the lights is one of my problems. DRL's have been mandated in the peoples republic of amerika for a while. I guess the best move would be to just pull the fuse.

Yep, Just pull the fuses for your headlights or unplug the leads to the head light. I unplug the leads to the brake light and turn signals.

I was scared shitless whilst on a trackday at Llandow (Wales) when the guy in front of me who I was catching rapidly with my right knee on the ground, started to brake mid corner. I'm glad I saw those brake lights. I had to close the throttle, roll out wide before nailing it to cut underneath him. What a prick
