I got up early the next day so I could ride some the canyon through Topanga - I wish i remembered which route - and doubled back to ride Mulholland Dr. I didnt wake up early enough to beat the LA traffic but I managed to make it all the way from the 101 to where it dead ends at a hiking trail. Snaking back through the Santa Monica mountains I headed back to route 1/101 and up the road to Santa Barbara. I hadnt payed 2 cents mind to Santa Barbara probably ever and when I got there I was blown away. 1 - knew right away I could never afford to live there and 2 - their city planning commission has their act together. Either way I ate lunch at another taco place and took some time to walk around.

I was supposed to meet up with some old friends for the night in Pismo Beach for the night so I made my way up Rt. 154 and somehow managed to not run out of gas. I didnt pay attention before i left and rolled into the Chumash Casino on fumes on the other side of the scenic San Marcos pass. The rest of the way was smooth sailing to Pismo where I was only a touch late to dinner. I got to haul my gear inside and hung out the rest of the night before I crashed on their couch. It was a real short visit since they had work in the morning and I had a schedule to keep but it was awesome to catch them on the west coast - Rock on dudes!

The following morning was spent scooting up and down Pismo beach and checking out the dune riders. After the novelty of riding on the beach I headed down route 1 through Big Sur. I must have hopped on and off the bike a dozen times checking out the sites - each one as picturesque as its reputation serves. With more wind and less traffic than I expected it was a bucket list ride, and Id recommend it to anyone if you get the chance. Its narrow with plenty of twists and turns that are a blast along with the view, I also didnt hit much construction as I was warned could jam it up.

I drug the day out until the sun was about to set and booked it up to San Francisco to check into the hostel spot I had booked. I had to skip a ton of stuff like Andrew Molera Park and Caramel for the sake of time so I guess I have an excuse to go back.

The next 2 days were spent trying to appreciate San Francisco. The food in Chinatown is the real deal and the Goldengate is an icon but the rest was pretty forgettable. The city seems to be a shell of its former reputation - the artists and the musicians have moved out and the people you meet are self absorbed talking about their tech startups and high rent. (The people I met that commuted from Oakland and elsewhere seemed much more down to earth). The nightlife was flat and absent of live music from what I could find. If I could do it again i would have spent another day in Big Sur but tooling through the inclined streets was an experience and I played tourist to see enough to not need to come back for a while.

My planning failed to realize the amount of traffic San Francisco has on a Saturday as I crawled through the streets and across the Golden Gate as I headed north. I took route 1 for more wonderful congestion until it cleared up after noontime. The coastline north of SF is like Big Surs little brother so at least the view is nice. The day was uneventful with a stop for lunch in some small town along the coast. Then without warning the laid back shoreline drive turned inland and up a winding mountainside around Hardy creek. This transition was jarring but exciting as I found myself cruising past bigger and bigger trees with cooler temperatures until I found a spot to stop in Benbow.
