Anyone ever fit Tiger handguards to Sprint bars? I've fit them up and the left side installs no problem, but the right side binds with the movement of the brake lever. Just wondering if anyone's done this and what a work-around was. There's a guy in my RAT pack who's done this on a Speed Trip, but I haven't seen him since I've fooled with it so don't know what his fix is.

I've just started messing with it so am thinking there's maybe different hardware I can use from the Tiger or just modify the guard and mount it with *gasp* tie-wraps or something.

I'll submit pics if I can get it to work.

Yeah I did it last winter and it worked great, especially in cold weather! I had to cut a hole in the bottom of the right hand guard to clear the nut on the bottom of the right break lever. Just fit the guard on and mark where it rubs the nut. Take it back off and trim a LITTLE hole (the plastic is really soft and cuts easily with a sharp razor knife). Be careful because it's really easy to take too much off. Put it back on and see if it still binds. If it does then trim a little more off. Repeat the process until it fits. You'll also probably find that you have to use the longer Tiger bolts to mount it, if I remember right. I forget which year Tiger hand guards I used, because I think there are different styles and some fit better than others if I remember what Kevin at Baxter cycle told me when I bought them.

I put a Brakeaway throttle lock on last summer and I haven't tried to put the hand guards back on yet this winter, but due to clearance problems I don't think that dog will hunt anymore. If someone is interested in installing the hand guards on their bike I'll see if they'll still fit mine and if not I'll sell them (pretrimmed) for 50% of what they cost me plus shipping which should be cheap.

If you ride in cold whether the guards really make a difference in your hand comfort!

Hope this helps!

Thanks! Good info. I'm hoping to have time to do the mod this weekend. I figured it would be a bit of a trim, etc. just didn't have the time to do it when I first put them on. :-D

Another question for you: did you have to take them off in hot weather or did you leave them on?

I guess I am confused. :???: What benefit do the Tiger handguards have that the fairing doesn't? On my '03 ST, at highway speeds the wind doesn't hit my hands unless I move them out on the bar ends. (The grips get no wind at all.)

Do you have enormous hands that are bigger than the grips?

scottius: I took them off in the summer to install the Brakeaway throttle lock. So I don't know if they would have been hotter on my hands in the summer. I would assume so since they kept the wind off my hands and my hands were warmer in the winter.

cricket1: I have Heli bars on my Sprint which raised my hands up and back. Maybe that's why my hands caught more wind (if they do) than the stock bars. All I can tell you is that my hands were significantly less cold in the winter with the Tiger hand guards on my Sprint.

I'll post pics on my album, but I didn't feel enough of an improvement (in the cold or rain) to recommend them so off they come. And I did have to use tie wraps, but it still looked clean.

I'll just keep using THESE GLOVES instead. Double use for snowboarding too!

Fun to make them work tho! Always fun to tinker...

So if anyone wants to give them a try (should fit RS or ST) drop me a PM or e-mail. Not sure of the total cost, but it includes the special shoulder-bolt and bushing that the Tigers use on the front-brake side. I figure $20 + shipping (U.S. only unless you really want to pay the intl costs  ) and they're yours.
