My highlander bars finally showed up - now I know what I'll be doing Friday. :) Need to fit the longer throttle and brake cables they came with.

I read through the Haynes manual instructions for removing the throttle cables - the book recommends removing the carbs, which surprised me. I've adjusted the cable slack before, but never removed the cables from that end entirely. Is removing the carbs really necessary? I figured it'd be somewhat easy to get in there once I had the tank off...

Any other tips appreciated!

I don't see why you would need to remove the carbs. I would think it would be possible to fit the cables and everything together, before finally positioning and locking the handlebars in place.

Wound up removing the carbs anyway, because I couldn't see how to remove the cable ends fully until I did. Wow, it was a pain in the ass finding the wiggle room to get them out too.
