This monring Suzy Suburban changed lanes right into the spot I was riding; not even a signal. We were doing about the same speed on 4 lane road. Thankfully I saw it coming and swerved towards the shoulder then braked to slow and merge behind her with almost no drama. When we came to the light I moved beside her, she was chatting on the celphone oblivious that she could have run me over. One must be wide awake while riding ... especially in morning traffic!

How common is this? Should I expect to get this alot?

She didn't even look? I usually get the look and smile at me then come over on top of me. Happens pretty much every other ride I go on. One thing you can do is try not to ride next to a vehicle. I try to be just a little faster than them.

Haha the old mobile phone addict. Take a mirror next time. They dont need them anyway. I ride the Ipswich Motorway to work every day, It's real experience, one has to be wide awake. Things like you have described happen more than once every day.

The same thing happened to me once and a cop pulled up behind immediately after. I wish he'd been there 30 seconds sooner.

Whenever I ride, I assume everyone is trying to kill me.

that's a terrible piece of road to call a motorway isn't it, it's so narrow. a least your traffic in brisbane is more docile than here in melbourne - all the rats racing to work in their traps

It is quite common and happens almost every ride.

When you approach them at a stoplight and read them the riot act, they will say "I didn't see you!"

This is why my signature reads the way it does.

Well, that's silly. Of course they'd see you then. And there'd be another story of a drug crazed biker threatening a defenseless woman.

My thinking is if it was mandatory to learn to ride a bike, everyone would be a better driver. At least more defensive for sure.

Now what if you had a 6 x 4" or so brightly colored sticker to slap on the outside mirror? It would work at a stop light. It would just require some convenient way to pull it off the bike and slap it on. Some kind of padon our tank bag (covered so it wasn't too obvious, yet tossable in the event of Gendarmes). It would have to say something like "Thanks, I needed an adrenaline rush today. Park teh phone or park the car -- I would have died if I depended on you to drive." Or whatever works for you.

Always ride 5 over. Never ride on the gutter side of your lane. Stay away from the cars that drive side by side down the road. Drill your mufflers out (it definitely works -- the cage drivers wont want to drive next to you). Install an air horn (Stebel Magnum Jr). Just because your paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you!

Cell phones have to be one of the biggest killers of bikers on the road in the USA.

Here they are banning smoking in the taverns, but they let some soccer mom schedule her nail appointment going down the highway at 70 mph.

Then you get the car drivers who hate bikers completely......... I was filtering passed stationary traffic that had stopped for road works when a volvo driving tosser sees me passing and pulls his car to the centre off the road forcing me into the coming traffic!!!! It was a close one, knowing the British legal system, if I'd have been killed, he might have been procecuted for driving without due care, and not murder/manslaughter.

Mate its mostly a two lane carpark of an afternoon. It has been widened a bit in some places.
I relly enjoyed Melbourne I was in Victoria for seven months last year. I found the drivers down there to be more "bike aware" and courteous than our mob up here.

So feeling pretty spoiled up here in North West Maryland with miles and miles of curvey country roads. The driver-less SUV was the first such incident in 600 miles of Legend riding so far.
Last weekend me and a neighbor went riding for about 100 miles and saw about 10 cars all day. Plently of time to focus on late apexes and smooth shifting. Those time make it all worthwhile.

did you leave his door mirrors in place? I hope not.. :)

I had the 'sorry mate didnt see you' the other week when a bloke in a small van decided to overtake the car in front just as i was alongside him.. bike went down the road on its side ('01 TBS i'd only had for 2 weeks) and me into a ditch.. waiting on insurance to sort it out, but as no witnesses and no apparent damage to his, I expect that i'll be out of pocket.. even though I'd followed him for a coupel of minutes with headlights on before the o/take, I'm sure he was just concentrating on overtaking the car in front as he'd beeen stuck behind it for a couple of miles.. when we got to the first o/take place he just went for it without checking his mirror.. unfortunately I'd gone for the o/take a few seconds before him.. :(
