My classic bikes' gas caps fit so tight and are so impossible to remove they act like "locking" caps with out a key. The profile is too low, so I wonder if the locking gas caps with be any taller, and hence, easier to twist off.

For anyone who doesn't know yet - I didn't till yesterday - New Bonneville has a cap that doesn't lock but has a sort of large-notched circumfurance that is intended to be and looks like it undoubtedly succeeds at being much easier, and that's putting it too mildly, to grip and turn. I've ordered one.

The one I bought from New Bonneville is taller. It works absolutely great. Very easy to get off and on. It clicks if you keep on turning it tight. Lock it and it just spins freely when trying to get it off. Unlock it and it screws right off.

I sleep much better knowing that my cap is locked as it sits in various hotel parking lots just about every week due to my work travels. I just hope no sicko figures out to open my oil cap to do an evil deed.

New Gas Cap for my Thruxton

I just got a new locking gas cap for my Thruxton...I just spent the past 30 min trying to unlock it (the dealer put it on). turned it til it locked and the cap spun...turned it fully the other way til the cap clicked when I turned it. Tried turning it 1/4 of the way...I, for the life of me, can't figure out how to open it. I think I might have a bad one. Any thoughts?

Maybe what's throwing you is the fact that when the cap is "locked" it actually freewheels. If you hold it still with one hand and turn the key with the other, it is locked when the key is turned fully clockwise and unlocked when the key is turned fully counterclockwise. When it is unlocked, you'll feel resistance when you attempt to turn it. At this point, unscrew it like any other gas cap. Hope this helps.

dbarber is dead on with these directions. I have the same cap and it is great!

dbarber is right with the directions. This is my locking cap on my Bonnie. I love it, it works. Although the first time was an experience as I couldn't get it off. When locked it does freewheel. The first time after fitting and unlocked it came off tight (does that make sense), I had the same problem with the stock cap at first too in regard to taking it off. The sits just lightly higher than the stock cap, making it easier to turn if you're a little arthritic. I've used it since July and no problems now.
