I'm looking to get a new-to-me bike, and in my searching have come across a '98 TBS. It's got 13k miles, and the seller states it's been sitting since 2003.

He's asking $2400, and I'm trying to get an idea if this is a decent price or not. Things it will need:
1. tires
2. full tune-up and fluid replacement, as it was last serviced in 2002 (how much for this at a shop? I can do it myself, but it's good to know for bargaining)
3. registration with expired tags (potentially $$)

I've searched around a bit, and am quite interested in this bike, but thought I'd solicit opinions from the "experts" before getting too serious.

Here's the bike:

Thanks!

Wow, that's a good price for a TBS. I'd buy it.

The tank might have some internal rusting if it has been sitting so long. I don't think fluid replacements would be very costly, but a full tune-up at a dealer could take a few hours. You'd want to budget a new battery, too.

So my guess - you're looking at maybe $250 for the tune-up, maybe $65 for a new battery, and then around $250 for new tires.

Nadaguides quote TBS base price (no extras) of:
Low retail $2,150 Ave retail $2,830

Which is a little inconsistent when they quote $2200 and $2895 for a TB of the same year. But low figures make a good bargaining point for you. I would definitely argue low retail for a bike which hasn't been used for three years.

Thanks for the quick responses! I, too, think it's a reasonable price, especially if the seller will come down a bit. Just have to work out some time to visit it in person...

i just bought a 95 TB that was sitting since 02. the battery was only 45, plus oil, filter, brake fluid, and youre going to have to clean up the carbs, whether you do that or someone else is up to you. sounds like a great deal for a TBS though. good luck.

I dont think any of the guides really help with a bike as (relatively) rare as this. they really havent got much to base the figures on, and are usually on the low side.

Persoanlly, I would say the price is very good.

Vitamin C:

If that's the only thing wrong with the bike. Go for it.

I recently bought a '98 TBS exactly like this one except mine had 16,020 miles on it when bought. I paid $3000 & based on my price watching for about 3 months prior, I felt that I got a good deal.

I agree with the other posts. Change the fluids and you'll likely need to have the carbs cleaned. They're probably "gummed up" from sitting so long. As someone else said, check the fuel tank before you start riding. Definitely could be rust in it.

Tell him if you get it running for a short spin you will buy it. I would want to at least hear the motor run. Maybe you could split the cost of getting running. All in all it is a sweet bike.

I'll sell you my 2000 Creamsickle TBS but you'll be paying a little more than $2400 USD.
