:confused:Newbee;
I hope someone can help me out here.
I just replaced the alt. shaft on my 95 tbird (only 5600 miles on bike)
when i tried to start it, the batt.(less then a year old) seemed weak. It was fine before i removed the alt. I used a jump box and it started up and ran great. I tried to start is the next day and the same thing. i charged the batt. and still the same thing.
Did i do something wrong removing the alternater ? When it turns over the small black wire (the one that plugs into the harness) attached to the neg. cable got very hot.
I'm boggled.

earth strap?

Did you remember to re-connect the earth strap which goes onto one of the rear alternator cover bolts?
If the earth strap is not connected, the neutral/earth would go through the harness earth, which being much smaller cross-section than the earth strap, would get very hot, enough to melt the insulation in fact, unless you switch off quickly.
