Being in North Dakota, lots of people up here have western boots. You can get the shank as tall or short as you are comfortable with. They are slip on, but if they are fitted correctly, they should not come off easily.

On the boots, I have them resoled with a low lug sole rather than a leather sole for grip on the pavement.
