So I have a friend's ovaled forks from when he rearended a flatbed truck. The inner and outer sliders are locked, albeit fairly straight overall, and the forks are trashed. But I'm trying to salvage whatever I can before tossing them.

I can't seem to figure out how to take the caps off. The manual is pretty sparse. All I know is that I need to compress the white spacer and start unscrewing the cap But it isn't doing anything.

Anyone have any ideas?

PS: is it even worth the trouble to get the caps, spring and damper rod out? Any resale value, or value as a spare?

If they are bent, it's probably not worth the effort. My guess is the damping rod inside is bent along with everything else, and that's why nothing is working. I could be wrong, since I haven't had 675 forks apart ever, so I haven't actually thought about what's in there very much.
