I've adjusted my stock suspension to the manual's specs for "single rider - firm" but it seems to get really hobby-horse-like over uneven pavement. I assume this is a necessary compromise to achieve a sporty feel the rest of the time, or is there a way to achieve both good handling and a comfier ride?

Unfortunaely, the thrux suspension parts are marginal. Recomend new rear shocks, Ikon are a nice impovement for reasonable money. In the front new higher rate springs will help, unfortunately the dampers are orfice style which have major compromises between comfort and control. I would make the above changes first and then determine if you want to go further. Might as well install ebc hh front pads at the same time for nicer feeling brakes.-good luck-T1

I just switched to Ohlins in the rear, which are nice except it now magnifies the deficiencies with the front suspension (merely changed to heavier front fork oil). I was wondering about a damper but it sounds like upgraded springs are better. I'm still sorting this out but based on my experience I suggest dealing with front and rear together.

T1 has said it all. The suspension is indeed a Thruxton weak point. Search the forum there's plenty of advice.

My set up is custom Hagon Nitro rears (spring rate to match my weight & riding style, preload, damping & rebound adjustable), custom front springs and a Traxxion damper rod kit. I have standard length Thruxton rear Nitros, (bonnie has 25mm shorter shocks) and have lowered the front 15 mm. The transformation is beyond belief. There are many other possibilities - different strokes for different folks. Take your time - don't rush out and implement the first bit of advice that seems right

Speaking of Nitro's, they have different spring rates... 18kg, 20kg, 23kg etc.

Out of curiosity, what rate did you chose? (and what's your weight & riding style)

Ricor Intiminators

A reasonably economical mod that works wonders for damper rod forks are Ricor Intiminators.
I installed them on my SV650S and they transformed the front end completely. Compliant but controlled. They are much easier to fit than something like gold valves and you don't need to do anything to the existing damping circuit like you do with Gold Valves. Just drop them in and shorten the spacers to make adjustment to the length of the intiminators. I also fitted one of their rear shocks.

I made a few adjustments to stock suspension on my 2012 thruxton. First I went 2 clicks more preload from stock position on the back and rode for about a week. Then I added front preload to the second or third mark from the top depending on if you count the top before the nut starts a mark. Going through the same canyon I Always ride I noticed right away after adding front preload not as much dive. I was getting more bounce effect before with stock front settings. I even have a back road by my house that will induce the bounce effect due to its contour and its less now with more preload vs stock set up for my weight at 220lbs.

Here's an easy trick add a zip tie to your inner fork one thick enough to not bind shocks action before your next ride . Go ride and see where the zip tie ends up. Then when you make your adjustments and go ride the next time you might see a difference in location. Its better if you have a stretch of rode your trying to tune for you can reset it ride and check it make adjustments etc.... You'll have not just a feel feed back but a visual indicator as well.
